I have a dog kennel I no longer use for the dogs. I want to make it a tegu enclosure for Gooch. I know that I need solid walls. I plan on doing that with wood. But how high should they be? Also there are stepping stones for the flooring so he can not get out. But how much mulch should be put inside? I want him to be able to get natural sunlight during the day. But he can not stay out there because we have predatory animals that can hurt him. He will sleep inside at night. This is the enclosure it is 8' by 12'
good thing I read the dimentions before I wrote anything bad..... I do know that some people keep their reptiles outside, but im confused as to what would happen if a cricket or something with parasites or pesticides were to walk by and the reptile ate it?
In our breeding colony, the enclosure walls are 3.5' high, and the more determined individuals (typically females) can sometimes still get out. Keep in mind that the higher the "solid" wall, the less direct sunlight your tegu will receive.
I have seen other people with their tegus outside.I guess I would have to ask neighbors if they use pest control too. But I didn't think about that so thanks deadirish. I was thinking how good it would be for him to get natural sunlight. Shannon
If the neighbors do not use pesticides and I do turn the enclosure into a tegu cage for the day time only. Would he benefit from just a couple of hours a day? I was thinking I could put hm outside when I am cleaning house or his cage. But I am for sure going to wait till he is larger before I put him outside. Shannon

Sounds like a good plan! Keeping Herps outside is great. Maximum exposure to natural light is the best. A major bonus, to any herp, being kept in captivity! Sure to make any Tegu happy

My outside enclosure is 8 feet by 8 feet square. Three feet tall. Cement floor and 6 inches of substrate. I use this during the summer and bring the tegus in when it's chilly or really wet outside. I have a 10 foot by 10 foot kennel around the enclosure to keep animals out.
We do have lots of water bugs because we live close to some water. I have asked my neighbors if they use pesticides and they told me no. Do you think it would be safe? Also I know I need to wait till he is larger, but what is a good size to let him play outside? Shannon

If the pen is secure and it's a warm sunny day they should be fine to take out to the outside enclosure. The first few trips should be with the tegu remaining in your hand. Not all tegus are used to the outside (its a HUGE enclosure with no walls or ceilings)
Once they are not stressing put them in the outside enclosure but sit there with them.
Don't leave them in extreme heat, cold or rain. Make sure they have shade and fresh water.
I am going to put wooden walls up that are fully enclosed.I am guessing about 3 ft. tall and their is a very large dog igloo house in there. I will put mulch maybe 6 to 8 in. deep. I will stay in there with him because I am the biggest worry wart. LOL Put I will let every one know if he likes it. I may not let him out till next summer. I still have to make sure it is very secure. Shannon
