Ok, I boought this little guy on sunday. I had him out of his tank for a few minutes and i let him run around, then I put him back in. I took him out again yesterday and let him run around again on my floor. But when I went to go pick him up he became very squirmish and I put him back down because I didnt want him biting me. So i finally got him back into the cage by leading him up a magazine and then picking the magazine up and putting him back in. Just now I tried picking him up out of the tank again cause I was gonna let him out for a little while, but I couldnt get him, everytime i go to pick him up behind his front legs( like the way your suppose to handle them) He became very squirmy and i just let him be cause once again i didnt wanna piss him off. Is there any way to not make him like this. I mean I do wanna take him out and let him wonder and just hang out. When I first got him he did let me hold him for quite sometime. But i just dont know what the problem is now. Any help would be great! Thanks

i'm no expert on tegus (i've had mine for less than a month) but i've had other lizards before. i think you should let him get used to his new surroundings and settle in before you try and handle him again. if you bought him from a pet store or breeder, maybe they didn't let him run around or even handle him and so you would be the first. maybe he's not used to getting picked up. just give it some time and be patient and i'm sure he'll warm up to you. i hope this helps.

All young tegus can be a bit squirmy. Normally just hold it daily (not let it run freely) until it's used to you. This can take a while, sometimes it days days, some times months..

What kind of tegu is it?

As far as handling a newly bought tegu. I normally suggest giving the tegu a couple days to get used to their surroundings and to feel secure. If they seem really stressed I do allow them more time.

12-14 hours on the UVB - The heat lamp is up to you - Some people turn them off at night, some leave them on all night - I personally leave them on as I like my house on the cool side - So long as he is getting proper basking time "for digestion" and nice warm temps during the day, the temps can go down at night - I keep the basking temp at 110 and ambient around 80 in my enclosures ...
