My enclosure smelled pretty bad also and I found an easy solution.
VOLCANIC ROCK.
You will see these bags sold under all kinds of names. Basically its volcanic rocks inside of a mesh bag. You see them advertised on TV a lot for cleaning odors out of cars, closets, etc. They actually do work and they last for years. You just have to put them in direct sunlight about once a year.
I've seen them called Refresh A Car ()http://www.homefocuscatalog.com/home/cleaning-and-storage/80105-Refresh-A-Car.html) and other stuff. I use this in my car and I also have one in the cat liter box. Works AMAZING.
A company called Gonzo makes a bunch of them (they're all the same)
I dropped a bag in my enclosure last night and all the odor is gone completely. Doesn't smell like roses of course but the point is that it doesn't smell like ANYTHING.
I put my tegu's in the bath everyday and it seems to keep their smell down. My enclosure doesnt really stink. All you have to do is keep it clean. Lizards don't naturally smell like roses, so if you wanted your house to smell good maybe you should have gotten one. My question is, is it healthy to have in the tegu's cage? Im not familiar with the product, but it was just the first thought that came to mind.

Some reptiles smell. And so do the enclosures sometimes. If you have a lot of reptiles they also smell. It may be fine for you but my enclosure is in the middle of my living room which is the only space I had and regardless of how much cleaning there is SOME odor. The volcanic rock works perfectly for me and it works perfectly in other areas also especially for my cats.
Why would you be rude about it? I have a lot of animals in my home and odor can be a problem. Plus I've read a lot of posts on here about smell and enclosures and this solution worked perfectly for me. It's a suggestion. It works. If your tegu is smell free congrats but you don't have to be rude to me.
- It's ALL natural.
- It's been a solution for odor since the late 1900s.
(sorry you've never heard of it)
- In the late 80s it became popular as an alternative for sprays and aerosols which depleted the OZONE layer.
- It's ROCKS.
- It's in a BAG.
- They don't eat it.
So keep your rudeness to yourself please. Really unnecessary.
Will they work in my bathroom? That's where the real smell is. _________________ 0.2.0 Rottwielers

Never heard of it either. And maybe thats because were in a different country (hollygouda also lives in the netherlands)
I wonder if they sell this product over here too...
Could you maybe post a picture of the bag?
Its only vulcanic rock in the bag? No gemicals on the rock or anything? (or the bag?)
And your suposed to put it in in the bag?
I wonder how this would work exactly...
But still it could work. _________________ 1.0.0 T.rufescens

I am also curious about it and i live in the states..
The rocks are in a bag, and even if the bag was kept out of reach, the dust that comes off of it is what i would be worried about. I know that volcanic ash and dust can wreak havoc in our lungs, and a Tegu's lungs seem to be more sensitive. Not saying that this stuff is bad, but i think i might be a little nervous. _________________ The Jay
Ash? I think you guys have the wrong impression of what volcanic rock is.
I don't really know what to tell you guys. The product has been on the market for years. I have been using it for years around my house, bathroom, basement, garage etc. And it completely removes any odors and lasts for years. It just needs direct sunlight every 3 months or so for a few hours. It's not pourous rock. It almost looks like very small pebbles.
My tegu could care less about the bag. He climbs on it in sometimes but for the most part he ignores it. Depending on the brand you buy, the bag is made out of different materials. I posted some links as to where I received mine. The best bet is to try them for yourself and you'll see how good they are. If you dont want to use them for your tegu try a litter pan or if you have other pets, like dogs, or put them in a closet and test it. They work.
What you use yours for is up to you. My tegu is fine.
I posted the suggestion because I've used the product for years and it works especially well for me in the tegu enclosure. Because of the kind of bag it's in, you can also hang them. Some of them come with grommets so if you're worried about your tegu eating the bag. Just put a nail up and hang the bag out of reach but still inside.
That sounds like a great idea. I am going to look into it. I don't like the way the cage smells even though I am religious about cleaning it. I have used cedar since we got Scoobie but after a few days it loses it's "new cedar smell." Thanks for the idea!

Cedar is toxic to your Tegu - I would suggest you get it out of there immediately ... _________________ 1.0.0 Ball Python "Albino"
