Playing "tree" with iguanas seems to work pretty nicely. Gently and calmly get the iguana into your arms, and if it starts flailing, and acting up, gently lift it high above your head to where it can feel like it's in the highest, safest part of the room. The idea is to make the iguana feel comfortable, so just squeezing it hard and throwing your hands up in the air isn't going to work real well.
The thing that worked the best for me, was I went out and got a nice cat-post, one of the ones with places to perch on, and let my iguana sit on it while she was out of her cage. Every day I moved the post a little closer to the couch, so that she really got used to us while we were calmly watching tv or doing another non-threatening activity. When she became comfortable with the idea of being very close to us, we started offering her foods that she really relished as treats, like pumpkin, the occasional grape, or cantelope. Iguanas are total suckers for food!
