cage: 6 by 3 by 2 feet at least
heat: cool end 80-85, hot end 100-110
substrate: coco bedding, orchid bark, cypress mulch, dirt all are great(keep slightly moist)
food: (best things come first in line) rodents, bugs, veggies/fruits, eggs, fish. offer supplements 2 times a week
water: clean water daily, it should be big enough for the tegu to fit into
supplies: heat mat/ light, uv light, water bowl, food bowl, substrate, cage, 2 hide boxes, thermomitor thing

BTW, whats a cheap way of heating the cool end? and can i use a heat mat instead of a heat light?
help is aprish icon_smile.gif eated!

Looks like you're on the right lines with temps, substrate, feeding.

You may not need a heat source at the cool end, depending on your room temps.

For me I find it easier to allow the coolest part of the cage to be a bit on the cool side (say 75 Fahrenheit) most of the time; then if we get a really hot spell it stops things from overheating.

Ideally, especially if you have a cool room, you might need a redbulb or ceramic heater on a thermostat at the cool end to keep it at say 80 F.

I'd say your cage sizes are too small, even if you are going to let your
tegu out when you can. I think a floor space of 8 x 3 is prob. a realistic minimum for an adult.

Cheers

I don't think you neccesarily need the entire hot side of the tank at 110, rather the basking area would be fine so there are varying temps - He may want to bask at 110, but still hang around the hot side of the enclosure in temps lower than 110, but warmer than the cool side ...

yeah, thats what i mean, i dont think increaseing cage size is hard, rather than 8 by 3, can it be like 7 by 4, or 6 by 5? i can easily keep my room at 75 btw, now, getting the tegu is my main problem... icon_rolleyes.gif

I wouldnt use a heat mat instead of a light - tegus sense heat from above, not below, so the main heat source should be above them. It will also brighten up the cage.

As well as a thermometer, you should pick upa humidity gauge (cant for the life of me remember what theyre called). Humidity should be between 50-80% in the cage.

Yes thats fine as you will have the same floorspace.

If the cage size was 6x5 wouldn't it provide more floor space than an 8x3 cage? 30 square feet as opposed to 24? And a 7x4 cage would be right between the two at 28 sf. So wouldn't a wider cage ultimately be better? Just a thought.
