A new store that specializes in reptiles just opened in Hemet, Ca. They carry the Cypress mulch I need. I am so glad because I didn't want to use repti bark. My question is they are 11 quart bags. My enclosure is 6' by 3' by 2'. How many bags should I order to fill the enclosure? I am not good at this kind of stuff and would love some help. I have to order them in advance so they need to know how many I want. Thanks, Shannon
Thanks Rick, They told me one bag would cover the bottom of a 30 gal tank. But it is 14 dollars a bag!!!! Wow! But I think it is better than repti bark from what I have read. As long as I keep doing spot cleanings and keep the cage very clean how often should I change the entire cage. Cypress mulch is very expensive out here and very hard to find!

I pay $5 or so for a LARGE bag through Agway, who orders it for me.
Spot cleaning will help a lot. Complete changings depend on how well you spot clean and how many tegus you have, as well as enclosure size. Just change it when it starts to smell.

It takes me 4 - 24 quart bags to fill a 4 foot by 18 inch wide enclosure 6 inches deep with substrate - My guesstimate would be around 10 bags for you since they are 11 quart bags and you have more space to fill _________________ 1.0.0 Ball Python "Albino"

Thanks Thee01Edge. Glad to be here. I probably should have accounted for some air space in the mulch, it probably won't take 21 bags, I'd probably start with 10 and work my way up and see where it ends up...
I don't actually own a Tegu yet, but I've had a very succesful and rewarding experience with a bearded dragon (it's going back to college with my son)...I've been doing a ton of reading and am pretty sold that a B&W Argentine would be good for me. The only other pet I have is a cat that actually displayed affection toward the bearded dragon...maybe just enjoyed the scratching it got when it nuzzled it. Surprisingly, the beardie would run right up to the cat on the floor and on at least one occasion climbed on top of it...
So I've been lurking here for several days and I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions go forward. The folks here seem real friendly and helpful...

I just got off the phone with the Home Depot in Hemet, CA and they have the large bags(don't know the size off the top of my head) of cypress mulch, as well as orchard mulch. Each bag will run you $4.99
I buy the same sized bags and it took 4 of them to fill 6'x3' to 6" tall.

i see nothing wrong with it. Also thought it was strange, since cypress trees and orchards are common in southern california.. _________________ The Jay
