Under the Tank Heating

Hello all,

I am breeding B.Dubias in a big rubbermaid container. As it is becoming colder this time of year, and just to bring their temperature up anyways, i was thinking about using an under the tank heating pad. I was wondering if these herp heating pads would be too hot for the plastic container? Any thoughts?

I put the smallest pad they make under mine and they seem to like it. I've had mine for a couple of months and they don't seem to be making babies...

definitly not too hot, I use heat rope under my roach bins and the temps on the bottom off the bin reach 105f in the summer and my roaches are breeding like crazy

Just put a UTH pad under half the plastic box with vertical egg crate. That way they can move up and down as well as left and right to warm up/cool down. This is what I do.

Got an update..

I recently bought an 18"x9" UTH pad for the D.Bubias. Man.. they sure do eat a lot now. I have to check their food everyday to make sure they still have food. Their numbers are increasing fast too, and everytime i look in there, i see more and more babies. I also see a lot of females with what looks like long sacs hanging from their backside. I am no expert in roach physiology, so i could only guess that it has something to do with babies.. I will try to take a pic of it next time i see one.

Are you remembering to take the babies out of the food? sometimes they get born in there and get killed by the adults (or thrown out by you changing the food, did that a couple times

)

i bought a small UTH for my ten gallon roach tank. it says that you need to use substrate with it. would just newspaper be ok or will it get too hot? if not what should i use?

Newspaper, indoor/outdoor carpeting, sand, etc. would all be fine. UTHs get VERY hot and should only be used with a dimmer switch. You can buy a dimmer switch for under $10 at Wal Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. You plug the dimmer switch into the wall and the UTH into the dimmer switch. That allows you to control how much power the UTH puts out, thereby controlling the heat output. Be sure to leave at least 1/4" of space between the bottom of the aquarium and what the aquarium is sitting on so the UTH can "breathe"

how long do UTH take to warm up? i got a small exo terra heat wave (8x8 8watt) and ive had it on for over an hour now and its just warm, not hot at all and is definetly not heating up the tank.

It can take up to several hours for the UTH to heat your substrate. UTHs are not going to (IMO) raise the overall ambient air temperature in your tank much.

the way i heat my "roach rack " (which is a modified bookshelf) is with heat rope (i dont rememebr if it's esu or zoomed maybe even exoterra)
it covers about 3/4 of the rubbermaids (actually the generic equivalent)
and egg cratyes are stacked up so they can get away from the heat if need be, it works very well, I have had a huge population boom to the point where i have way too many roaches for my needs (so if anyone reads this that needs any i'd be glad to sell you some super dirt cheap)

I'm looking to start two new colonys Ameivaboy, one of giant cave roaches and one discoid. How much you wanting, and where do you live for shipping it's really cold right now in ohio. Right now I raise Superworms, Mealworms, and Hissers. The hissers get fed to my tegu some times, but I keep them more because I just enjoy having them, hell my Gecko's even ate one once. Took him awhile to figure it out though hes a big boy. Well get in touch, I'm more then willing to take some of these off your hands if you don't mind.
