The spot directs the heat to one small area, and the flood will spread it out. Its not really a good idea then to use spot lights with any other than the smallest tegus, as the risk of thermal burns will increase as the larger tegu tries to warm its body under a small beam of light. The tegu should be able to warm all of its body at once, so IMO floods are the way to go. We have 2 80W floods in our cage, and they maintain temps just fine. They may be a bit more problematic in a small cage setup, so whatever you do, just make sure to measure the basking spot temps rigorously. A tegu that never ventures to the basking spot and spends all its time at the cool end is trying to escape the intense heat.
