John: You state over and over "most of the people I know don't use UVB".
How many people do you know that have had Tegus (not Monitors or any other lizard) for over a couple years? How many of those (who don't supply some form of direct sunlight) do NOT use UVB?
I think if you examine that question you may think differently about your statement. I know MANY people, and even more on here, who DO use UVB even if they are not sure if it is required. Take a look at the UVB poll that's been running. It's not even close. UVB users lead by 91.11%

I did see that and I'm considering installing the fixtures into the visions. Bennett doesn't have UV on the baby albinos that I know of, they will be moved out when they get large enough. A few friends (3) keep them without UV inside. Far more people do use UV...but is it really needed? I wish someone would just do a study on it already! I still recommend it on my site, I'll end up putting the fixtures in. _________________ John Light

I don't rely on time telling me that something is necessary or not. Guess I'm just not that much of a risk taker. As I stated earlier, I know that MBD can be an issue with young Tegus because I've seen it. That brings me to the conclusion that UVB is a required part of young Tegu husbandry. I even use my older fluorescents on the adults. Can't hurt, may help. _________________ Mid Michigan Reptile Rescue and Rehabilitation

I am personally glad you decided to err on the side of safety. No since risking your tegus. Besides, it's also my opinion that if the majority of the people feel it's best to use it, they would be less likely to buy tegus from someone who refuses to use it. Business-wise, it's a sound choice to use it as well.

I use UVA/UVB light just to be safe. Even if it turns out that it is not needed to prevent MBD it still promotes normal behavior (UVA) which is a good thing if you ask me . As for a study not being done yet thats probably because the government isn't going to fork up any money for a study to do with captive reptile husbandry issues. Unfortunate but true . Just my thoughts on the subject.

I believe UVB exposer is essential to all youngsters, who are not exposed to sunlight. I do believe it is directly related in increased growth rares! I don't believe it is needed for adults.
