My albinos still don't have UV and I have not noted any problems. Their main diet consist of mice. Still working on them to get them on roaches as well in which will be supplemented. _________________ John Light

It is probably a safe bet that tegus digest food differntly than snakes but feeding whole live prey like rodents does provide calcium AND D3. Yes they gat D3 from the liver of what they eat. That along with propper suplimentation will help a lot. Is UVB neccessary?? I say better safe than sorry for 40$ for the year it's worth it. _________________ Bennett

Thus is true, why take the chance? I plan on installing some fixtures soon. My albinos are now on full sized adult mice. I'll probably switch them over to smaller rats now as they will grow faster on them thats for sure (atleast from what I've heard). I've also changed their diet from 2 ever other day to one a day. _________________ John Light

Do not quote me on this since I do not know it to be fact personally, but I have heard all over the place, that adult mice actually have more calcium and required nutrients, so are better for the tegus then the small rats are.
I do not know this for fact, I have seen no reports or studies. Thus, this is not an opinion of mine, based on fact. It's merely a relay of information I have seen and repost for you and everyone to mull over a bit.

it is always better to feed adults rather than babies. A large mouse has more nutritional value than a pinkie rat. Pinkies and fuzzies do not have the calcium and D3 an adult has and they contain more fat as do X-breeders _________________ Bennett

Yes, but if were talking subadult rats and adult mice here...with the same spiecies I am sure you´d better take the adults if looking at calcium.
But withsubadult rats and adult mice it may not be the adult mice you should pick. I´m not sure on this one...
It is more body mass...so maybe it turns out to be even with calcium and more fat in the sub adult rat?

I'll have to e-mail some of the breeders (mice/rats) and find out, I'll also e-mail some of the big dog tegu breeders to see what their opinion on the matter is. For now I will stick with the adult mice! One thing is for sure...they are CHEAPER!!! Cheaper is good lol as they aren't cheap to keep! _________________ John Light
