could i use cobblestone for a basking platform for either my tegu or my beardie? i have a big pile of it out back of my house. all i would have to do is wash it off dry it and allow it to warm up. but i would like to know if it was under a heat lamp for 12 hours a day if it would be too hot for either lizard to lay on? anyone? thanks

oh and they both would be about a foot or so from a 75 watt basking bulb. thanks

I don't think cobblestone would absorb much heat at all. If I were you, I would put down the cobblestone and top it off with some dark colored slate to absorb the heat. No way a lizard can burn his belly on a stone 12 inches away from a 75w bulb.

Hi meanah ( Daniel ).I use a Rock that I got out of a River for my Bearded Dragon. He seems to like it a lot and it helps with filing down the nails icon_biggrin.gif .I'm sure you can use the cobble stone but please make sure you soke it in some vinegar solution ( 1 part Vinegar and 5 parts water ).Make enough solution to cover the entire stone. The vinegar will kill every thing and let it dry all the way.If it would get to hot for him he will move to a cooler side. With the Bearded Dragon he will open his mouth. What I do then is I spray him down with some luke warm water ( not cold,I don't want to shock him ).

dont do that, you can drown your lizard because he doesn't expect it to rain in such a hot desert that he thinks hes in when hes basking and doesn't hold his breath. you can try to prove me wrong, but all that will do is give your bearded dragon pneumonia because it doesn't know how to cough and wont have a way to empty the water out of its lungs. you maniac. how can you treat your animals like that! thats torture !

I think you are being either very rude or you just don't know how to read.I sad that I spray ( that means misting ) him down from neck to tail with a spray bottle not with a shower.I noticed that this is not the first time you are being rude to some one.If you can't be nice to some of the members on this forum I would appreciate it if you please wouldn't say any thing at all.Have a nice day.

Maybe she wasnt doing right there but there was no need to talk to her in that way man, this is a friendly forum where we come to share info and LEARN. So please respect the other members, just say what you want to say in a polite way and we'll be all happy. It's clear that she wasnt trying to be cruel, and besides, she wasnt at all, some spray wont drown a lizard. icon_wink.gif

72x, I find it funny how you compare water-boarding to misting a lizard? You're basically saying that it absolutely NEVER rains in the desert? Pneumonia, as well as most RI's are mainly caused by low temps with high humidity, stress, or bacterial infection. You're saying that if a bearded dragon drinks then it's going to get pneumonia or drown? I can tell you one thing, I've been misting my beardie for 8 years and not once has he had a RI. Misting is actually beneficial to a lot of lizards and snakes as even for a desert dwelling lizard, even desert lizards need a certain humidity requirement, too low will hinder sheds, misting helps that. She didn't say she misted the beardie right in the face, It's a common practice to mist the lizard on the back of the head (gently obv.) to allow it to drink. If you're going to attack peoples ideas then at the VERY LEAST know a little about what you're talking about and don't be rude about it.

Perry.

aheh! Perryftw sure told the other guy! lmao.

I dont spray them, but I always see them in their water bowls, sometimes with their head just resting on the top of the water. If that in anyway would injure them, then there is no way they would do it by instinct.

And meanah, I put two sandstone-like rocks in with my beardies, they don't get hot as they are in the cool area of the tank, and they help to keep their claws down.
Another thing, they seem to like rocks that have a steep gradient, instead of flat rocks, I dunno why.. But yeah, they're always sitting on them, they have one each.

One thing I would say, in preparation is soak it in hot tap water for about 10 mins, then cook it in the oven for about 10, then soak it again, and then leave it to dry out for a couple of days, then it will be perfectly safe icon_wink.gif

oh yeah i forgot, about the distance from the light thing, well, I had slate in with my WT monitor, and it was about.. 7-8 inches away from the bulb (It was 100w though..) and I put my hand on it after it being in for an hour and you could hear my skin frying on it, So I took it out and three hours later, it was still warm.. So I suppose the conclusion is.. either put it further away from the bulb, or don't use slate. =)

Yup they do, they have a water bowl at the cool end near the rocks, which is also trailed over with a plastic plant that they also sit on, and there is on in the corner of the basking area, which I see they mainly sitting in, which evaporates quickly.

It makes their shedding much easier when they are willing to wet themselves, and I actually never thought about spraying, my male has had some problems shedding little bits off his tail, So I gave him a quick spray on the tail, he seemed to enjoy it!

I have a bowl that is big enough for him if he wanted to sit in it but guess he doesn't like to take baths.I tried to give him a bath with a little bit of water in a clean empty bin but he hates it.But he LOVES to be sprayed down.I'm glad to hear that yours like it,too.

i also mist down my Bes she loves it. and she doesnt mind baths. but im just trying to figure out what i can do for her in her cage. cause im gettin another 40 gal cage. which is 36" long by 18"wide. and i wanna have several different basking platforms for her. shes getting back to health everyday. and im so happy for her. shes more active and more alert. and i am bringing her back to the vet on tuesday for a check up. hopefully all goes well. the only set back with her right now is her digestive system isnt fully working she has passed half digested pinkies, crickets, and mealworms. but she is willing to eat her sluge everymorning. and i got some dry food for her today to try to get her to eat as well. and i think today that she ate some of the greens i have been leaving for her.
i cant wait till this weekend to watch her all day. gah i hate working. haha thanks everyone but 72x your just totally rude.
