hi guys, my name is Jason, my best friends have asked me to take there black and white Argentine tegu into my care. they are leaving the country, they are being stationed in Italy for three years by the air force.

i have owned 2 boas before, a Columbian and a Suriname red tail, but never a lizard and i know the tegus needs will be different than a constrictors. they recommended this forum to me to get some information. they have told me a lot about it themselves, but i thot i would stop in here and see what other knowledge i could garner from here. i personally believe that anyone who owns an exotic animal has to be prepared to provide everything necessary, any animal deserves the best care possibl, but exotic ones seem to have more needs that say a dog or a cat. i love reptiles, and i want to make sure i can give this tegu a good home. so ANY info would be very much appreciated. ill be building a cage, so suggestions on that would be great, suggestions on substrate and food would be great too. thx in advance for the help guys!

yep its kats tegu akiva. i dont have her yet, i will be picking her up once i get a cage built,2 weeks maybe i would say.

the only reason i need a new cage for her is because the cage they have is literally 8ft by 4ft, im gonna have to make something a lil bit smaller, something like 5x3 maybe.

thx for all the links guys and the warm welcome as well.

Your welcome.Sorry,I didn't know that they changed her name.Since your enclosure is going to be so much smaller please make sure that Akiva gets to free roam a lot.

yeah, ill be letting her out once shes a lil more friendly, she gets nippy cuz she always gets fed in her cage, so she assosciates the cage door opening with food. and she isnt that big, maybe 3 and a half feet with the tail, she wont get any bigger form what theyve told me since shes like 6 years old, so i think a slightly smaller enclousure will be ok. im not sure whether i am gonna use screen or lexan for the cage yet tho. im working on it.

I would build a enclosure out of wood and thick plexi glass because her enclosure needs to hold a lot of humidity or she will have shedding problems. If she doesn't shed properly the shed can get stuck on her and it will cut of the circulation and she can loose some toes or part of her tail.

and u say 3and ahalf, does that mean she will get bigger? i hope so, and does anyone know if i can get a liazard leash and walk her in the sumemr? that would be awsome, i would get a kick out of that icon_razz.gif

Yes,they do have lizard leashes.I already have one for mine.Just be careful when you put her out side on the ground she might bite you.My Leonidas is just 5 months old and I take him to the pet stores a lot but when I put him down on the ground for the first time and I wanted to pick him up he looked at me,jumped up and bit me ( he never bit me before ).I had to drag him inside with the leash. But as soon as we came inside he looked at me like what just happened so I picked him up and he crawled up my arm and licked my cheek. Now when we go out side he is hiding under my shirt and sticks his head out of my collar.
