Long enough to where they new my hand meant food. I'd walk over to the visions and place my hand on the glass to slide it. The tegus would come running. You let them check you out (don't get to close) and within a minute or 2 they realize that there isn't any food. i don't want my animals thinking my hand is food or may have food in it.im a firm believer in feeding out of the cage for this same reason tegus learn quick where food comes from them chasing the tongs is another example.as for gloves i don't use them either and not for my animals hating them i like the feel of my animal in my hand.but will use a glove for some things as i don't want to be bit.if i play in the street long enough ill be hit by a car.why take the chance for the thrill of the bite? i don't want a record like 160 plus bites from venomous animals how many times has he been dead 2 or 3 i think and lost fingers and such to bites nope not me.i got bit the other day first time in a long time and by a snake that never bites so it just reminds me there wild animals who put up with us for the food and shelter we provied
LMAO!!!!! If a ball python bites me ANYWHERE (pet store, herp show) I bring them home! No one says "that's just a ball python" when it bites anything in site! I love em fiesty! LOL people with snakes is another thing. OMG it bit me. I'll laugh at them (unless it's like a 8ft+ burm, retic or alike that can easily cut an artary). If it's a fiesty non-venomous animal I'll probably be bitten (not like I care). LOL A friends ball python bit me 30 times by the time I was done cleaning her cage. That was fun, I think my entire arm may have been red. I got what your saying though and totally understand. I'm still against the entire out of the cage thing but not like it matters. I'd like to see someone try and feed a 16ft w.c. calico (known to be nasty) retic and then try and get it back in it's cage. Some animal have a very strong feeding response that isn't going to change if you move them to feed them (retics for example - anything that ambushes prey). If someone wants to hand feed I'm not going to tell them not to. Just be sure they know what can happen (if it's a 1/2 decent bite your going to the hospital!). _________________ John Light

ROFLMAO i knew it you and my friend would be in heaven together i saw him take over 30 bite from a macklots one time but it did finilly stop biting.well as for the big boys i agree on them and also add that for snakes over 10 to 12 feet at least two people be there.i got a burm thats 10 feet but she is sweet and i think im ok for a few more feet lol i feed here in the cage but i do get her out alot so not to bad with her.had one retic a 7 foot yellow head sweet snake till i misted it while i was holding it bit me 6 times for i could get hold of it.i guess im the other extreme.i almost never get bit all my buddies say im a woose lol well 80 plus teeth can do that lol but we were talking albout tegus lol want to come hand feed my blue male lol was cage fed whole life still charges the door but i back up and let him out and i can handle him fine
