This is my new mexican black kingsnake, he's super chill, even ate after i drove him around for 5 hours super friendly and calm, he was chilling with his head stuffed in my hand for an hour last night.
he's a little dull, i think he's gonna shed soon.
anyone know if he needs a bigger water bowl? or is his tank too small?
i'm very inexperienced with snakes.

lol, for some reason i thought i posted a different pic.
the cage is an 18x18x18 exo terra. coconut coir as a substrate till my cypress arrives which i will mix in.
his water bowl now he can't properly soak in. maybe if he coiled up he could fit like 3/4ths of himself in it. but he seems to just drink from it and he hated it when i bathed him in warm water. a caresheet said you only need to provide a small water dish for drinking. but i don't trust caresheets.
that little half log in the photo was removed for a larger one. he fits inside it fully.
i added a large climbing branch, but have not seen him use it. he seems kinda terrestrial
i need to mesure him, not sure how big he is. i'm used to lizards, i haven't had a snake since i was 10. i feel like his tank is too small. but i was told they like a smallish tank?? seems kinda bull to me. i mean, who would want less floorspace. _________________ 1.1.0 Arg B/W Tegu Joker n Groxy

id say if its more then 24 in or so its too small.. i guess u could up grade. id say something in the size of a 36x18x16 or so should be more then big enough for a long time if not its whole life.. but work with what u got for now _________________ 0.1.0 Colombian Tegu

nice, very nice. I would go bigger and I hope you have one of those reptile/snake safe enclosures because snakes are houdini's. alot of rocks on top won't stop him or if it is a screen get those metal thingys ..clamps.
he's noctournal. about 85 on the hot/warm side and again 70 on the cool side. a hide box/cave should be place on both ends so they can regualate their temperature and not get stressed. tighter the better with preferably a hole on top just enough to squeeze in and out so they feel secure. a regular shoe box works. if you want a third box with the humidity and moss for shedding so they don't over soak. the water dish should be big enough for him/ her to soak after a meal, before shedding ... imo, newspaper.
yea, i don't think he climbs. i turned off his little 50 watt spotlamp, till it got below 70 and he was sleeping, then turned it back on, he came out to sun from the ground, but he wouldn't climb.
also, he's a pretty tight fit in his half log, entrance still too big? if i covered the front with fake vines would he like it or should i just yank it and put in a hide made from tight fitting tupperware?

lol, he did climb! got up on the basking branch after eating last night.
and ummm, i thought snakes didn't eat much? he has ate 2 small mice a day for 3 days and last night ate one large adult mouse. so am i overfeeding? i thought snakes only ate like 1-2 times per week? _________________ 1.1.0 Arg B/W Tegu Joker n Groxy

You should feed him a cornsnake or anoles they love them or just might mate with the corn
Bad idea. Anoles are usually full of parasites and feeding cornsnakes does not really make since unless the kingsnake is a very picky eater.
I would probably feed that kingsnake an appropriate sized f/t rat every 5-7 days. As of right now worldeater you are doing things backwards, you research the animals needs than you get it (it saves the snake a lot of stress).
i did reaserch in the time avalible, the guy i got him from was moving away. i had 2 workdays from the point to where i heard of the snake to having him home.
they say an adult does good in a 30gal, but my exo-terra tank couldn't be less than 25 gallons volume-wise. problem is it's the shape of a cube, so actual terrestrial area suffers, leading to the question on tank size.
when he kept eating i figured maybe he was under weight or the last owner starved him, i thought snakes only ate when hungry. after last night i realized he was a pig, leading to the question on feeding. nowhere in my research adventures did it state that kingsnakes will eat constantly if you let em. the ball python i had when i was a kid never ate more than a mouse a week.
but these are the finer points that directly relate to my situation. research never stops. especially with an unfamiliar type of animal like a snake. research gives you a baseline of requirements and needs. after that experiments, questions, and eventually the experience that brings, are the only way to move foreward as a responsible pet owner. _________________ 1.1.0 Arg B/W Tegu Joker n Groxy
