I love tree monitors. But they don't make the best of pets as they're very flighty. They don't tend to be aggressive. But they're very shy and don't like to be handled at all. And they do require fairly specialized care. Not what I would consider a beginner animal. Also keep in mind that 99% of them are wild caught animals and are often in quite poor condition when they arrive in country. So, if you're thinking of buying one:

A) Do lots of homework on their care prior to purchase (try the kingsnake.com monitor forum)

B) Be prepared to purchase or build a large arboreal cage

C) Be prepared for the fact that it will most likely be loaded with parasites and will almost for certain require a trip to the vet.
