Hello,

I do not currently have a tegu YET, although im considering one, or maybe one of the monitor species... I went to my local reptile store today, and they said they will be getting some black & white tegu babys in about a months time... i asked what they eat, because on this forum ive read that they are carnivours.. and eat crickets and mice etc.

She told me, that their main diet should consist of crickets and worms, fruit and greens, and fish.. (smelt ) shrimp etc.... and as a treat maybe once every 2 weeks or so a mouse.. when i said i was thinking of using mice and crickets as their primary diet, she told me that, " that's discusting " and so on, and so on.... is it really that bad??? She compared me feeding the tegu mice, to me eating Big Macs everyday for food...?

Do most people feel the way she does about this? Anyways.. just asking, because im looking for a lizard that really doesnt eat greens etc...

thanks

Welcome to the site - Primarily I feed my Tegus mice every other day and lean ground turkey the day in between with supplements and my Argentine will eat bananas on occaision, however my Colombian will not eat fruit. Occaisional scrambled egg is thrown in there as well. My Tegus have both lost interest in insects now that they are bigger "The chase aint worth the catch" IMO, however when they were smaller they both ate crickets and superworms as well as the foods mentioned above - I have never fed any fish, however I think a few on here have - Pinky mice are fatty, however as the Tegu grows in size, so will the size of the mice fed - Adult mice are more nutritional for the Tegu, and they grow very fast so they will be off pinkies in no time ...
