Well first of all Deuce is ding great and growing fast!
He's keeping the name Deuce, nothing else seemed to fit him...go figure.
Anyways Deuce seems to like spending time outside his enclosure, I take him out when I have time and he likes to explore my bed, he digs under the pillows, and the comforter. He usually comes out for his "bed excursions" late morning early afternoon. A couple hours after he has eatten his rat fuzzy and done his business. BUT today he peed on my bed. We were just hanging out watching TV and he walked up next to me streached out a bit and peed on my bed. OK that's not cool...I thought that once they did their business for the day they were done. He had only been out about 20 minutes, and nothing scared him.
Is this something normal for Tegu's? Can he be "House trained"?
Thanks for any info or ideas.
Becky

Maybe he just had to pee again and did not get it all out the 1st time - I usually dont take mine out till they have done their business - There are accidents that will happen though - Maybe he was startled, maybe he felt comfortable enough - You can always soak him in warm water before you take him out which will usually make them go, however accidents do happen...

Sigh.....urination is a natural process in all animals. Human beings are one of the few organisms (anurans, canids and felines being the obvious others) that have managed to learn to override the body's natural default reflex to "void the bladder" when a certain capacity has been reached. Ever raise a child, or seen someone else do so? Remember how long it took to pottytrain them? And that was with an organism that actually understood your language. I do think tegus possess a rather elevated intelligence for an average reptile, but to actually train them in this regard is a rather large challenge, something I don't think is likely. As Teiidae stated, there are methods you can go to to try to pre-empt such events, but I think you'll just have to settle with the idea that unlike the dog, these guys most likely will not ever "wait to be let out". If nature calls, they'll answer.

Don't be under the impression that dogs always get let out.

Mine do it just for a giggle I think. Little F*%&ers

When i'm drunk, even I have accidents, and i'm supposed to be intelligent.

Do you have dogs? i have my colombians in my bedroom, they roam free in the room, have their basking spot, doggy bed under my bed and some other stuff to make them confortable, they usually pee in the floor, but if i let the dog come to the bedroom it seems that they dont like the odor of the dog and go in a rant of pee icon_rolleyes.gif (also the dog trys to mark his spot in the places where they pee, and the dog its trained to do it outside), the dog and the tegus are all males.

They also do it when they feel sick, i dont think that thats a natural behaviour but mine do it.

Like Teiidae said, a soak in warm water before you let them out works well for getting them to "get it out of their system". I put my Colombian in the bathtub with some warm water running and he's gotten in the habit of going as soon as he hears the water. It's also a nice way to bathe him.

If you're encouraging him to go, rubbing him on the back where his tail meets his spine seems to excite the need in mine. He'll tense up there and start to lift his tail, then pee shortly after.

Good luck!

Hi Guys - Thanks for all the help and colorful.... explanations. I guess I was just under the impresstion that they were more like a dog and were trainable in this area. Peeing and pooping on carpets, and beds in our home is not acceptable, however I realize accidents can and will happen.
I was told basically that they do their business once a day, put them in the tub with water they do their business after that they are done for the day. Now obviously if you feed them a quantity of food now their body will have to digest it and move it thru the body and they will have to go again.

So I guess it's about learning their bodies schedule.

For example my son has a senegal parrot named Kiwi, anyways since smaller parrots like Kiwi do their business frequently. We know that she will do so about every 15 minutes, so we take her off of her cage after she has done her bossiness and put her back on her cage in 15 minutes, she again does her business almost immediately and is ready to get back on our shoulder for another 15 minutes.

I am sure if the bird can be manipulated in this manner surly Deuce can be manipulated in the same way, I hope. Cross your fingers we'll see how it goes.

Thanks again
Becky

Yeah it sucks mine is having that same "problem" I call it. He has pissed the last 2 times I took him out in like 2 weeks. Before it was after I feed him which is understandable but I feed him yesterday I saw the business in the tank, took him out for like 5-10 min to get out of his enclosure and he did it on the couich. He never did this when he was in his 60gal rep tank but since I moved him to the enclosure like 2 weeks ago he has done his thing twice. I will for sure make an effort to soak him in the tub though. Last time I did that he did his thing so I would rather it be in tub and not the couch. IT not fun to clean up... I've already had enough time with the damn puppy and cleaning up its messes.
