hi guy's i have a question.i just got a month old argentine black and white tegu from reptile auction, breed from langerwerf stock,he arrieved 8 days ago,so far he has eaten scrambled eggs with cheese,he will not eat dead pinkies, crickets, meal worns,or anythig that moves.the temp in his reptarium cage is 83-90,with a basking temp. of 92-100,and the night temp. is about 70-78,i've tried everything and the only thing that he'll eat is just a little bite of eggs just a bite or two.i'm worried that he will get to weak to eat on his own,or is it just that he is going into hibernation and he won't eat right now.i am new to the care of tegus,i'm more of a snake person.can anyone help me or give me some advice,i tried bert langerwerf the breeder but i got no reply.

thank you. lonewolf

I think the problem is your basking temp. Basking temp should be around 100-115. And another problem is that you might need a UVB light to simulate his appitite. When i first had my colombian he was the same, (didnt like to eat) when my basking light was at 95 and I didnt have a UVB light. He didnt eat much. When I got all his requirments for his enclosure, he ate almost everything you offered him.

It is also advisable to drop the cheese from the diet. Tegus, and all reptiles, are lactose intolerant. Perhaps the tegu isn't eating because its tummy is upset.

No more milk for my milksnake? The horror icon_sad.gif
She gets cranky without her warm milk in a bottle every night.

It's the UVA which stimulates habits including feeding I believe.. or atleast that was the idea back when I last looked it up.
You can find that a number of Basking lights will provide it in various quantities.
It's one of the main reasons I use ZooMed, though I'm sure Exoterra has it too.

UVB lights... well, I use them to be safe, but it has little to do with feeding habits as long as the animal isn't weak/lethargic which would be signs of other more severe things which could be solved with a UV B giving light..
You know, like the Sun? icon_smile.gif

Best of luck
