Im just wondering if it would be a good idea or make it harder to tame him? I have a vision cage 4x2x16 , right now he is in a 55gal..Would I end up having to chase him down in the bigger cage and scaring the heck out of him?
Thanks CRG
The problem isn't stress.. in fact a larger cage could relieve a great amount of it on him... but it's the fact that he may have trouble finding food, but if you feed elsewhere or use the clicker method.. I wouldn't see a problem other than as you said, a small hassle finding him. _________________ 2.1 Beardies

I would have to dis-agree, while I would agree a too small of an enclosure would stress a tegu or any amimal for that matter, feeding inside or outside of the enclosure is irrelevant - The Tegu in captivity and in a known enclosure of it's own, in and of it's own, feels the comfort of it's own "security zone" - Change is not to be taken lightly - They will need to feel more secure as their "allowed environment" grows and changes... _________________ 1.0.0 Ball Python "Albino"

I would have to dis-agree, while I would agree a too small of an enclosure would stress a tugu or any amimal for that matter, feeding inside or outside of the enclosure is irrelevant - The Tegu in captivity and in a known enclosure of it's own, in and of it's own, feels the comfort of it's own "security zone" - Change is not to be taken lightly - They will need to feel more secure as their "allowed environment" grows and changes...
Change will take place eventually for all animals lest they are raised in the first and final enclosure.
I understand fully the need for an animal to feel secure, to be touched in all sides at rest, or to walk throughout the enclosure and know where everything is and what's to occur.
However, security can be given in any enclosure with the proper help.. shaded areas, hides, burrows, nooks and crannys..
We change the environment anyways every time we perform a full enclosure cleaning, which on my watch is every 3 months or so, with full substrate changes every 2-6 weeks depending on the species.
I know little of tegu mannerisms, I'll admit, but I've seen a gecko's rounds checking the cage every morning, watched the monitor always return to his favorite hide when threatened or intruded upon by a stranger..
Security zones have to be re-established regularly regardless of a change of enclosure or not. The few times I'd hesitate to do so are when the animal is ill or extremely stressed, wherein even I move them to a smaller enclosure which is far more easily maintained while the animal is recuperating.
You may be right, I may be right, we both may be wrong .. it's not our animal.. it's CRG's choice over all *shrug*
We're just stuck giving opinions. _________________ 2.1 Beardies

How jumpy or flighty is your tegu? If it's flighty then the extra space will make catching it harder, thus making it more stressful. What size is the tegu? If it's a hatchling I'd keep it in the smaller enclosure for awhile, but if it's not then feel free to move it.
As a rule, if the enclosure is too large it can cause some stress on many tegus, though not all, but if your tegus is already calm and mellow it should be fine. If you put the tegu in a larger enclosure and then the tegu acts stressed you can make a cardboard partition that will make the tegu more secure, you can always move or remove the partition later.
he is almost 3mnths old and he is very flighty, I got him from Agama int. I think I will just let him be for now and see what hes like in a few months...Im very afraid he will hibernate, someone else told me that the ones from agama will all do that..I dont have any cool places to keep him if he does.

How big is he now ? My Argentine at around 3.5 months old is like 22", housed in a 90 gallon - So he's damn near 1/2 the length of the tank already - He will be moving into a larger enclosure within 2 weeks - I would say that once your Tegu is 1/2 the length of the enclosure, It's time to move up in size...
Keep your heat and lights on in the enclosure as you normally would, and he will most likely Not hibernate... _________________ 1.0.0 Ball Python "Albino"

I believe those are vision cages - What do you have in the bottom enclosure ? _________________ 1.0.0 Ball Python "Albino"

Yes they are visions..They are okay but I do have some issues with them..The bottom one is bowed and it makes it hard to slide the doors.Plus I wish they were a little bit taller.the lower one has a Columbian boa in it.She just shed so she is hiding in her expensive cereal box hide
I bought the visions from the companies website, when they had a sale so they were 199 each shipped and that is a really good deal, Shipping will kill ya.
I intend on making my own when both these critters get bigger.
If you look above the tegu's cage you will just barely see my ball python in the corner, hes soaking in his bowl ( I hate a soaking snake it makes me nervous..I always think mites)
