i got my tegu last week wednesday and the last 4 days he is nearly constantly under the substrate. he is feeding as i coaxed him out yesterday and fed him of the forceps. i had to know if he was feeding as i was a bit nervous after he ate fine at first but then seemed to eat only every 2nd day. yesterday was a every second day. he is out in the morning when my girlfriend checks on him and out at 5 when i come home and check. them when i go in again hes gone til maybe later and sometimes he doesn't come out at all again. his routine befor hiding was to burrow down for the nite between 10 and 10.30. its nearly 10 now.
what worries me is he hasn't defecated yet. i sniffed all over the viv but canonly smell damp substrate.
i don't want to take him out unless needed as he is a bit wary of me. is there something that will make him go for a dump. he does not look bloated

A soak in warm water will usually make them go...

i know about that but don't want to stress him by digging him out and restraining him unless i really have to. is there anything i can inject into a feeder mouse? a mild laxetive or something like that?

Only other thing I have done to any of my Tegus to make them go is I've had one in for an enema - If you are that concerned about seeing him go, I would go the warm water route 1st before anything else - He may be going fine and it's buried under the substrate...

Baloo, Teiidae did not say dig him up.
He said soaking them will help them go.
So just wait until you see him out and about,
if you dont want to stress him out place a
towel over him, let him clam down then remove
your tegu from the cage. Now the tough part
keeping him in the water icon_lol.gif

today was my first day of since he started behaving like this.
lights go on at 10 and at 10.30 i checked and he was out.
he seems to be out mostly during the day until 5 pm and then he hides again. i gonna reset the timers and have light come on from 2 pm to 2 am. that way i may get a chance to see him out a bit when i get home.
i hope he doesn't take to long getting used to a new time cycle. i know it takes upto 6 weeks with my fish
he does not look like he is full and bloated so he must go somewhere in the vivand bury it. i find out for sure when it starts stinking icon_lol.gif
another good thing was he basked on the glove 2day when i left it on his spot. thats got to be a good sign

Much of what you are describing sounds normal. Most shops feed only minimal rations, to slow growth down. So, when you first bring them home they are hungry. Once they have filled their stomachs a few times, they settle down back to normal, i.e. their instinct to hide is stronger than their hunger lol. It then takes a little while for their shyness to wear off.

My female tegu gets up at around 10 or 11 am, and goes back down somewhere between 4 and 6 pm. She often, but not always, reappears for an hour or two, but is always tucked up before the male.

He gets up at more like 12 or 12.30, but stays up later, maybe till 8-ish.

Don't expect more than 6 or maybe 8 hours of above ground activity.

Having said that if mine are hungry, they don't settle so well, and stay up later. Also, a good spray with warm water can rouse them. They often come out to investigate if I do this in the evening.

Cheers,
Mark.

spraying him doesn't rouse him. he enjoys a saok when he is up and comes down to the floor for it.
i have changed the timer to 2 pm to 2 am. it did work and he was up until just before 7pm
i fed him around 6 so he setled down. i try and feed a bit later tomorrow to see if he stays up. hiding all the time when i'm home from work isn't gonna get him used to me

does this apply for this time of year or all year round. with me working i never see my tegu and he does not trust me. resetting the timers didn't work as i got home early today and he was out sitting in the dark. my hobby room doesn't get any daylight. in the moment things are not working out well at all
