Since I moved my tegu into its new home I have noticed that when it is ready to crash for the night, it kicks mulch from around the hide box into the box, and it even dragged some plastic vines into the box! Once in there, it blocks off the entrance with mulch. Do all tegus do this, or only females? Mine is not yet mature but I am starting to think its female. I don't know how to tell for sure, when do the jowels of a male start showing up?

That's a good question and I don't know personally, but my female does the same thing and I know it's normal behavior, but I'm not sure if males to that either... I have a possible male, and he has never done it... but maybe he doesn't do it because she does... I couldn't tell ya. Females build a nest (I don't know if it's all the time or just when they lay eggs...) but it is 2 chambered and the bottom chamber is for eggs (someone correct me if I'm wrong) they push substrate with their front hands and also dig to throw it farther I believe. _________________ -Art-

One of my males does this too - He usually sleeps in his hide, while my other male just buries for the night - Both pairs of my Ameiva's have done this too - I think it's just more of a security thing...
Not only does my Columbian do this, but so do all 3 of my Argus monitors. I think it's a comfort / safety factor when they sleep ? inherent to safety from foxes and felines or some nocturnal predators. If something digs at the door they have time to wake up and it may block their scents from their hides a little.
