I just finished my out door enclosure for my tegus, they are both about 4 pounds and 3 feet long and I believe they are a pair. If I put them together outside will they try to breed? I am not ready for them to breed yet, would it be better to keep them seperate? If I put the male in the outside enclosure now and hold off on the female until next year, will the male be too territorial or should I just put them together now? Thanks!

Hi k8t - Last I recall you had an Argentine B&W, and a Red ? - If so, none have successfully bred to my knowledge - As a male and female they would most likely get along...

I am referring to my 2 black and white tegus. I also have a red but she is staying inside. I am not sure how I should go about putting the 2 black and white tegus together. Thanks!

Assuming you have already introduced them, there should be no problem housing " a pair" together, whether they would successfully breed or not, well If they're around 3 years old, in fact male and female, have been hibernated, adequate environment, than there is the chance of them hooking up icon_wink.gif

I introduced them and the male started to bite the females neck, so I seperated them. The problem is I was planning on keeping them together outside but I am afraid that they will breed. They are only a year old and 4 pounds, so if they breed too early I am afraid it will cause problems to the female.

From what I have read, at 1 year old, is too early to successfully breed, and have they been hibernated ? - Whether an attempted "mating or breeding" would cause possible future problems with a young female ? - This I can not comment on, however I have not read anything to suggest it would.

Biting of the neck can be both a mating, or dominance type of behavior, but again I would suggest as " a pair", they would most likely get along...
