I have read that you can tell the differance between the two species by examing the scales between their nostrils and eyes.. Are there any other ways that may be easier or work better. I just want to make sure I end up with a Argentine Tegu at an upcoming Expo. Thanks!!
Those scales are the loreal scales. Columbians have one, argies have two. An easier way to tell is by looking at the color patterns. Argentines have two yellow stripes that run the length of the body. Heads usually have some white on them. Agama international's website has good pics that show the difference.
Good Luck!
You might just be better off ordering one from http://www.agamainternational.com/ or from Ron St Pierre at the http://www.bluetegu.com/blue.html. They are really well known breeders of Argentines Tegus. I do know St. Pierre will have some hatching pretty soon. Another benefit from them is that they can almost 100% sex them so you can get a male or female upon request. Its not the same as picking one up yourself but I would trust any one of these breeders. Rick on here sometimes has hatchlings for sale too possibly he will have some soon. Good luck just a thought.
