I have been fascinated with gilas for some time now. I am wondering if anyone owns or has owned one. Have been handling tegus and monitors for some years and lookin at a gila as a possible next step (if they are even legal in my area first).

Gilas are on my "dream list" too. I just know they are VERY expensive, and you should never let their docile, sluggish behaviour fool you into handling them without thick gloves/sleeves. Natural sunlight is said to make even the tamest gilas become very aggressive.

yea, 1500.00 for a baby is a little steep. Got a freind that had a pair at a store he ran, said they were great as long as you know what they are, venomous lizards. Did find out that in tennessee, you can have a gila with no permit as long as it is not wild caught.

theres two gila monsters that live around my house here in tucson. i call one stumpy (for the reason he only has half a tail) and the other one i call peel for the fact hes bright orange like an orange peel. i really wish i could have one in my collection but with living in an area that you can find them in the wild brings up a lot of problems with fish and game (i've checked into it). but i guess if i cant have one in my collection to stare at all the time its just as good to have two of them living around your house in the wild.

that's even better than having one in your collection, you're so lucky! i'd love to live somewhere where there are wild herps like that living nearby. common toads are the only herp i ever see around my house.

I would love to have any herps live around my house. All I seem to find are mice and skunks.

I have some iggies I let go at my house that have stuck around : -). I treat calm gilas just as I would any lizard. Sure they can bite but they can become very calm. Babies are alot of fun. I haven't personally owned any but I have friends that have and I play with them often. No gloves, I refuse to use gloves for anything reptilian.

I caught them up the street and just brought them to my house. There are always babies all over the place here...I just relocate them to my house sometimes lol.

I wish I lived down there--I would be feeding all the rouge iguanas in my yard...right now I feed the deer instead icon_smile.gif
