Hi everyone,
I'm Val and I run a non-profit rescue for reptiles. We're located in BC, Canada.
We just got our first Tegu into the rescue and I will probably have a lot of questions, I hope you can all help. What I would like to know is the age of this girl. She was a stray so I have no history, she appears to have been well taken care of and is quite friendly. She is an Argentine and is about 12" svl and 30" stl. Any idea how old she might be?
Thanks for any info (btw, I've been reading a lot of stuff here, great forum)

Well, if she has not been hibernated she could be about a year old, but if she was hibernated she could be a few years old... Hibernation slows the growth of them down. _________________ -Art-

Welcome to theTegu - As Nero already pointed out, knowing whether the Tegu had been hibernated or not can yield a better guesstimate - An Argentine at 30" still has some growing to do... _________________ 1.0.0 Ball Python "Albino"

Thank you for your responses. So our best guess would be somewhere between 1 - 3 years old? Can you prevent them from hibernating?
Non-hibernated Tegus usually grow out 1-1.5 years, hibernated Tegu's usually in about 3 years - Either way my guess would be closer to the 1-2 year old range at 30". I have one that just turned 1 year old this July "non hibernated" and is the range of 44".
In captivity, keeping their heat/lights up daily for a 10-12 hour period daily, year round will most likely keep them from hibernating... _________________ 1.0.0 Ball Python "Albino"

Wow, they grow fast. I have 3 Savs in rescue that I think are fantastic, I love their personalities but this Tegu has really opened my eyes. What an amazing lizard. I saw a video on here (can't find it now), are most Argentines like that?
Thanks again for the info, you've been great.
did the video have lots of freindly tegu's on all climbing on their owner, and a catchy tune in the backround. if it did that's ricks tegu attention video there the most tame tegu's ive ever seen.my tegu's are tame but dont come to me for hugs.....yet. _________________ 0.0.2 b/w Argintine Tegu
