My year old male just defacted in the tub while soaking and he is prolopsed now. It has been a half hour and it has not retracted. I have him soaking in sugar/water but have not seen any progress.
Should I try to manually push it back in? I will drop him off at the vet first thing in the morning. What can I do until then? I know these usually
don't end good and sometimes it needs to be surgically removed.
I will give it some more time and try to push it back in if anyone has any
suggestions. Otherwise I am thinking of wrapping his back end like a diaper to keep it from drying out and getting irritated by the substrate in his enclosure.
Please reply with any help or suugestions!

Unless you are vet, I would not try to push it back in myself - I would find somewhere other than the enclosure to put him in for tonight, so there is no chance of substrate or other matter that may stick to him - perhaps stay close and keep it moist as well - misting occaisionally - and get him to the vet asap in the morning... _________________ 1.0.0 Ball Python "Albino"

I agree, you could do more harm than good. Wrapping it would be fine, but I would not put him back on the substrate. A tub with some news paper would be a much better place until you get him to the vet.
I took him to the 24 hour emergency vet in Milwaukee who has lots of experience with exotics. They were unsuccessful at pushing it back it so
we left him there so they could sedate him and suture it back in.
Oh, so we're all clear, it was his colon not hemipenis that prolapsed.
Anyway, by the time we got home the doctor called to say that he pulled
it back in himself right as they were getting ready to sedate him!
I WAS SO HAPPY TO HEAR THIS!!!!
We have decided to let them keep him there overnight for observation
and tests to determine why he had the prolapse. My guess is because he had his first quail chick and maybe it was too big and too much? At any rate, no surgery is needed and he should be ok!
I'm going to bed now!
Thanks everybody,

That is great news!! You done the right thing!! If he would have waited until morning it might have started to get infected. Glad to hear he will be fine!!

Prolapses are generally believed to be caused by food items being consumed that are too large and not fully digested, thus irritating the intestinal lining, or due to low humidity. Is your substrate really dry? Try keeping it misted daily. I know daily misting can be a pain, but it may be required. You could also get or make an automated misting system.
I am picking him up in an hour or so. Temps and humidity are
right on. I spray all of them at least twice daily. I will be able to talk to the doctor more when I pick him up. I think the quail chick was too much for him since it was his first ever. It seemed a little big for him.
I'l keep you all updated.

Romeo is home and doing just fine. He'll be on soft foods for a while
and will be getting 5 days worth of de-wormer (can't remeber the name,
not flagyl or panacure) They did some bloodwork as well and those results will come back in a few days.
We named him Romeo because he follows big Liz everywhere. He definitely knows she's a female!
My 1 week old red hatchling is doing great and has become quite
adept at hunting crickets! It's skin is SO soft. He/she seems so delicate
compared to it's future mates. It's tongue is dark at the end/tips.
Will it stay that way or end up pink like a B/W's?
