Has anyone ever used these?
Do they work well?
My gf has treefrogs in a 15 gallon tall and she needs something to help keep the temp up, especially now that its getting colder.
i'm also thinking about getting one to get the ambient temp up a little for my tegu.
any info on these would be much appreciated.

I've used them in a number of enclosures and I think they work well for some purposes. However, you have to be careful with their placement because they themselves get very, very hot. I find the conical ones from the UK (carried by PearlCo) work much better than the flat faced ones produced in the US. I've never had a PearlCo one fail on me, whereas the flat faced ones have.

the only downside to these is that from a glance you don't know if its working, so make sure you check your temps and or the bulb quite a bit

I've been using one for 2 years now with my ball pythons. It works great. It's still go'n strong.

I always fear possible contact and serious burns. Also, CHE's burn off a lot of the humidity in the tank. I'd instead consider an UTH (under tank heater). They also seem to last much longer. They will heat the substrate more evenly and thus more evenly heat the tank.

Just my 2 cents.

If using a CHE in an enclosed cage, you must purchase a CHE guard. That way your reptile does not come in contact with it. CHE's are absolutely great and I like them alot better than UTH. Since CHE actually changes the actual air temperature, not just giving heat to a certain part of the body. If you slept in a cold place, but your bed was heated, couldn't you still catch a cold? Now if you had a heater in the room, wouldn't you be less likely to catch a cold?

As a guy who once had a kingsize heated waterbed (under tank heat), in a bedroom, the heat from the warmed water actually does heat the room (enclosure). An UTH will warm the substrate which will warm the air temp in teh enclosure the same way.

If your room temp in your house is between 65 to 70F, an UTH will supply very good evening/night heat for a tegu without drying out the mulch. I am not saying CHE are not any good, but that the UTH is just a bit safer.

UTH is how all large ball breeder, leo breeders, etc. heat thier bins.

I use kanes heat mats for my tegus...but when I utilize above cage heat I buy this:
http://reptileuv.com/megaheat.htm
it comes with a screen across the top to make it safe to put inside the age itself.

I have never used a MegaHeat(tm) Heat Emitter, but it sure looks like an interesting product.
