Petsmart has tons of 50g's at $99.00. A problem you will run into is that aquarium will not house the tegu as an adult and they grow extremely fast!!! The most common and least expensive tegu is the colombian tegu. They are like the nile monitors of tegus. Colombian Tegus run from $30-50. You may want to consider the step up to a B & W which range from $75-100 and are much calmer. How big of a problem is cost? They are NOT cheap to feed! My juvies have been eatting 1 mouse a day! Anyways....good luck with whatever you decide!

like john said .. a 50 gal isnt going to keep the tegu forever.. if you are looking for the cheapest possible way i would suggest you get an anole instead .. when the tegu grows you will need to buy or make it a larger cage ranging from 5'x3'x2' - 8'x4'x3' larger is always better but its best to think about what you will get into before you get into something you cant handle

My Blues are kept in 54" visions. These are 4 1/2ft Long X 3ft depth X 18 inches high. They have worked pretty good thus far. My tegus are allowed out - ALOT - and generally don't spend to much time in their visions. The doors - on the bottom vision - are always open so they have access to a hot spot. I would love bigger cages but these work great for now. Anything smaller really wouldn't work out!

John & reptilica 1386: Your advice from both of you guys was very sound. Although living on Social Security it has sort of "cramped my style". I now have a ball python, adult, female. Incidently I just ordered my B&W Tegu. I have been in herpotogy since I was 16 now I'm 46. I have had a B&W but I had to sell it due to me moving icon_biggrin.gif I now have figured out I am going to buy a container made by rubbermaid that you might use as storage for different articles. Unfortunately we have no PETCO here way back in the woods, again to both of you THANKS AGAIN! rico58.

Might I suggest looking for a Horse Trough? Generally inexpensive and there would be no need to enclose the top. You could always hang a heat lamp from something over the trough. Tegus need a nice hot, hot spot so be careful, a rubbermaid may melt.

About the Rubbermaid I got the idea from a a fact care sheet on pythons later after I posted my message in thetegu.com, The article was about how to save money and still own a python, besides I intend only to reach a high of 90 degrees. In the future I may get stumped with some other questions I may need help then. rico58.

The basking temps of a tegu is generally 110f to 120f. Anything lower could cause health issues. 90f degrees is closer to the ambient temperatures.

I'd hate to deter anyone from buying a tegu, but just wanted to point out a statement that may have been overlooked. Tegus eat alot. At only two feet long you can expect to be feeding 3 or 4 hoppers or a good size mouse every night. You will need to spend a few dollars a day on rodents unless you decide to get a bunch of tanks and raise your own. Just a thought for consideration.

And now onto welcomes... Welcome to theTegu.com icon_smile.gif Glad to have you here! Hope to catch you in chat once in awhile or to converse with you here and there in the forums.

I wonder why you all keep buying your enclosures insteaf of building one out of wood... icon_razz.gif
Most ppl over here just make a wooden box and make little sliding things at the front for the glas..
Are you guys not that handy with carpenting or just lazy? (j/k)

Anyways this should be a good inexpensive way to make an enclosure
AND you can always decide to build a balkony in it as we did, or put a piece of wood or plastic plants in it and make sure it wont move by putting a nail trough it...as we done icon_smile.gif

And to add to Rick's advice. If you buy a red one he will be asleep for most half of the year so not eating (j/k) icon_razz.gif
I would certainly advice to breed your mice if your a bit tight with money..certainly when I see my red but away food like he has no bottom in his stomage...

I also suggest a horse trough. I just recently bought one and I got a 8x3 300 gallon for 168.00(which is cheaper than any 100 gallon aquariun). They do not rust, or leak. They come in various sizes, and are fairly light weight. With even just a little building experience, you can throw a top together in no time. Click the link for some pics on mine.

Hmm...why did I buy the visions? I've kept mainly snakes in the past. Eventually when the tegus get new much larger enclosures the visions will be used. They last forever and I got them at a very good price. I could actually re-sell them all and make some money! A horse trough is cheaper then building a cage. Building a cage takes time, more money, and a bit of skill. I just don't have the patience!

well an enclosure that the animal can see out of and you can look into would seem like a better choice since it would be a lot nicer to look at ( icon_wink.gif ) than some big metal trough
