When we got our tegu from a very respectable reptile shop, he had a big hard lump at the base of his back.
The tegu had been seen by a herp vet who said it was fused bone and possibly a birth defect.
It doesnt hurt him when I poke it and hell let me stroke him and run my hand over the lump without flinching... and generally causes him no obvious discomfort. But it does make him properly "waddle" rather then walk.
Im not too worried because hes ok with it but i was just wondering if anyone else had heard or experienced the same thing with their tegu?

i know they are not the same but i have a couple of beardies and the ounger one has a bump where the tail meets the body about the size of a small acorn under the skin. the vet has had a look at her and and thinks it is a birth deformity have had her since she was about 8 weeks old. it doesnt seem to hurt her she walks normal and climbs just looks a bit odd as she has a bump on her back if the vet has checked yours out not much more you can do.. like mine the animal seems pain free and leads a normal life leave well alone
it could be a birth defect or it could be a calcium deficiancy while he was growing the bones didnt have enough calcium or there was no uv and it all built up in 1 spot just my opinion. _________________ Goals:100 posts DONE!

is it a blue tegu? because if it is, I have heard that they are more likely to have birth defects because they are inbred. I guess all blues in the usa have come from only 4 tegus so with the hundreds out there you're bound to get a few of birth defects. aaaaah it adds character! _________________ Arg. B+W Tegu 1.0.0

Actually, blues came from a dozen or so imported hatchlings. Those hatchlings may or may not have even been related since they were 'wild caught'. There is no evidence that they were even all collected in the same exact location. I am sure Ron and Stella worked to make sure the original stock were bred and tracked so to avoid serious inbreeding.
As far as physical deformations from inbreeding, do you have any idea how many reptile morphs, for example.. the albino ball python or albino cornsnake, that came from one captured or imported snake? Some inbreeding is expected.
Keep in mind, out of hundreds of distantly related tegus only a few are bred. It's not like they are all being bred father to daughter, to grand-daughter, to great grand-daughter. If you pick up two blues from different sources they are likely to be many generations separated.
My opinion on the lump is as spencer pointed out.. a calcium deficiancy. I have seen several tegus who have deformed tails, legs, hips, rib cages, etc. from lack of proper supplements and/or UVB.
just sayin what i have heard. i could care less. i do realize that there are many different morphs of many different animals and crap happens but again im just being a parrot here. i have been in the reptile world scince ...... june and i have owned a tegu scince ...
