I am getting someone to build a cage for my blue tegu because he is quickly out-growing his 40-gallon breeder tank . The description of the cage is as follows: Length of about 5 or 6 feet, height 3ft?, and width 3ft?, and plywood bottom, back, sides also plywood with square cut outs of about 5 inches covered with wire for ventilation, plexiglass front that will swing open, and a couple holes on top for heat lamps to rest. About how many adults can I fit in an enclosure that is this big, or should it be bigger? Any suggestions on size would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.
That Would Only Fit I'd Say One Adult...I Just Built One Myself And It Came Out Awesome...Im Going To Post Pics As Soon As I Can Find My Cable To Connect The Digital Cam To The Comp..Anyways Mine Is About 5' x 2' x 4' All Oak...I Put The Acrylic Glass Substitute In the Front..The Top Is Solid Oak With Two HOles For The Basking Lamp And Heating Lamp, And probably 50 Holes For Ventilation..And My Tegu Is Only About 12-14 Inches Long...So This WIll Be His Home For A Min...The Only Thing Is Screen Doesnt Trap Humidity, Try Pegboard...Other Than That..1 Adult And Use Pegboard Instead of Screen That Would Be My Advice... _________________
Your safest bet will definitely be to keep just the one in there; its really too much on the small size for two when theyre fully grown, and there is a greater risk of dominance issues and stress keeping two animals in a small space. Its a great permenant size for one blue though. If you make it 3' high you could fill quite a bit of it with mulch - in fact, you could put a 1' lip along the bottom and have a whole foot of mulch for him to dig in! Just make sure though that any cage funiture you put in there touches the bottom of the cage; you dont want him digging under it and getting crushed.

I keep up to 2 adult blues in my 54" visions which are 4 1/2ft long X 3ft depth X 18in high, 3 would really be too cramped. Currently everything is seperated (the albinos) and my adult girls are off on breeding loan. When they get back they will again be housed together. They get plenty of time out of their enclosure and I haven't run into any problems. It's like anything....you can house a dog in a kennel as long as you let them out to run and so on daily. _________________ John Light

Well first i have to see how much space I have, I will try to make it as big as possible. Maybe I can make it even more then 6 feet and more then 4 feet wide . But I have to do something kind of quick because he's getting kinda chunky and is having a hard time moving around lol . Um, about the screen ventilation, maybe i can just make the squares even smaller? Would that help?

Kev has he like doubled in size? Last time I was there he had plenty of room. He's got plenty of time in that aquarium. The foil you put over the top is fine for keeping humidity in. _________________ John Light

Take out the log. He doesn't need it and probably doesn't even enjoy it...lol those kinds of things are for our visual pleasure. I have a giant 3ft long in my vision but it also acts as a hide which the male uses. I hope my male albino starts growing...yours may leave him in the dust! I mean he's growing great...but just hasn't picked up the mass the female has. _________________ John Light

Um, if I take out the log then i would have to get a strounger watt light bulb because he will now be further away from the light. So maybe I will do that, but he does enjoy just resting on the log.

Save yourself some mula and run to home depot or lowes. Bennett informed me that Zoo Med is made by Phillips. Myself as well as Bennett both use Phillips spot lights! I'm using 75W's in my Visions and the basking spot gets to 110-125! They love the heat! When they aren't sleeping they are super active or just laying under it. Man I'm so hooked on tegus!!! _________________ John Light

Do you have a heating controller? I have one from ESU that's decent. I wouldn't go larger then 60W. Be sure to monitor the temps. These are spot lights so the temp will be hotter in one area rather then the entire enclosure. My cool side is in the 80's. _________________ John Light

Okay, I have two options of cage sizes. The 1st is: Length 4ft 8 inches, width 2ft 9 inches, and height of 18 in. The 2nd option is: length 6ft, width 2ft, and height 18 in. I was going with the 1st option. What do you think?
