Hi all,
I've read that Red Tegus have "skin problems" once they mature. The info that I've seen acknowledges the problem, but doesn't describe symptoms, how to prevent it, or how to treat it. Would somebody share some information on this, please? Thanks.

They need alot of fruit in their diet to shed properly. I'm not sure what properly is. Maybe a complete shed in under a week?? Our approx. 5 year old Red has had 2 sheds since we got him. Done in under a week with a couple of baths. _________________ 1.1 Blue Tegu +21 EGGS, 1.0 Red Tegu, 0.1 B&W Arg. Tegu

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know of a site with some scientific data that might clear this up a little? Or maybe a breeder's site that explains this problem? I've looked (maybe not hard enough), but can't find any conclusive evidence or even a description. Maybe, I haven't found anything because there really isn't a real problem? As with all reptiles, temperature, humidity, and diet play a role in their overall health. Could this just be an individual husbandry issue? Thanks again.

I think I've found the same thing. It looks like another case of one person mimicking another's statement with no proof. I'm sure all shedding problems are husbandry related.
We don't fully seal our Tegu's enclosures, if the mulch is damp (not wet) there is plenty of humidity under there where they spend more than half their day. I think too much humidity will cause more problems than not enough. _________________ 1.1 Blue Tegu +21 EGGS, 1.0 Red Tegu, 0.1 B&W Arg. Tegu
