Hi everyone!
This is my first time on the forum. I have two questions:

1. How fast are tegu's naturally in the wild? The only one i've ever been in contact with is dog tame and always moseys around slowly but I cant imagine they are all that way in the wild or they would get eaten.

2. My B&W has refused every ofer of fruits and vegetables that we've tried. He'll eat turkey meatballs, eggs, whole rodents, steak, etc but wont touch anything else. Is there any way I can entice him into eating the other stuff?

Thanks!

icon_biggrin.gif hi welcome to the tegu icon_biggrin.gif young tegus are more flighty than adults icon_biggrin.gif young ones can be eaten so they are flighty nervous icon_biggrin.gif adult tegus have few predators so they are less flighty icon_biggrin.gif

feeding young argentine tegus will eat some fruits but not alot. some of mine ate bannanas , apricots , melons, straw berries. bread . most are hardy eaters of insects , mice , meats just add some fruits adults argentine tegus eat alot more fruits than young tegus especially red tegus which require large amounts of fruit to stay healthy icon_biggrin.gif

Welcome to the forums!

First off: Wild Tegus no matter it's size can run very fast. I know this because i tried to catch a 3 footer last year icon_biggrin.gif Let's just say that i had 4 goes and was not even close icon_razz.gif He outran me way too easy.

I don't know the age of your tegu. But yes, from what i've read young lings don't tend to eat so much fruits. However....a good way to make them eat fruits is by using Fabians technique.....Which is to basically mix fruits with raw egg.

Good luck

Hi ecostation.Welcome to the Tegu forum family.I hear a lot that young Tegus don't eat fruit or veggies.Next time what you can do when you make raw lean ground turkey meat balls put some fruit of veggies in there. Here is some info that you might want to check out.Hope that helps. How old is you Tegu and what is his/her name ?

I had one more link to a list of foods that you can give your Tegu but I don't know what happened to it.I'll try to find it.

Hi Ecostation

TxRepGirl's advice is the best way to get your tegu to eat fruit and veg if they won't willingly. We have a red and the only fruit he will eat without hiding it are Red Grapes. But we roll broccolli, greens and other fruit and veggies into his turkey mince or chicken, so that when he eats his meat he gets his fruit and/or veg as well. It is a neat trick and they do fall for it icon_lol.gif

Hi ecostation icon_biggrin.gif and welcome to theTegu family icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif enjoy

on the other hand Angel loves eggs so I place the meat of the day with egg and put it in my chopper and for the last touch add a sprinkle of calcium D/3 icon_razz.gif

and for my args I do the same but I place a little sweet fruit and press the chopper button and for the last touch just a sprinkle calcium D/3 icon_razz.gif
so far so good

Another top idea that I might have to steal Angelrose icon_razz.gif

Louie loves eggs as well and chopping the fruit into them with the chopper is a great idea icon_biggrin.gif

I read on here previously about grinding down some of the eggshell and sprinkling it over the egg which is what I do now and Louie loves it, so that was another fantastic idea taken from the forum as well.

Hey people, since you already answered the diet part, I just wanted to show you some videos to support Chris' stories haha. We both live in Argentina so we have seen them, the fastest I've seen was running on his two rear feet for 10 meters. Here you wont see them racing but can get an idea on how fast they can be.

The first one is just too funny, Chris that knows Spanish will understand what I'm talking about, that tegu didnt get scared in front of the guy haha.

Thank you Fabian for the videos.I love the first one.I think if I would have a wild Tegu running at me like this I would start screaming and run away from him and when I'm not around him any more I would start laughing and maybe try to get close to him again icon_lol.gif .
