I recently bought a black and white tegu from a local pet store. The owner said that he is under a year old. They feed him mainly on pinky mice and large crickets but this thing is 33 inches long now and is still growing! He does not have jowls yet and I have only had him for a month. I had to call a local zoo for some questions and the herpetologist though I was pulling his leg when I told him how big my tegu was. I would like to know because I need to build a new pen for him.

Hi shimmer and welcome to theTegu family icon_biggrin.gif
CONGRATS ON YOUR TEGU icon_cool.gif

the extreme giants or the chacoan white heads can grow over 5ft. and weigh 20 pounds.
a 33inch tegu should be eating more then pinky mice and large crickets.

the extreme giants or the chacoan white heads are only bred by bobby hill/varnyard and the last I read he did not sell any to petshops.

does anybody think that tegu looks a little older than less than a year? Either way congrats on the new adition . Pet stores usually are full of it, thats why the pet store next to my house has had 6 red tegu's and in the last 2 months they have lost all thier toe's and they only feed them dry monitor food.

Before I was kicked off Bobby's site I had an exchange with him regarding my Tegu. FYI - mine is 8-9 months old and about 33 inches. Bobby assured me he was not a Chacoan but agreed that some could have gotten into the pet trade as he sold do some dealers. Mine did have some of the signs of being a giant, a v under his neck, although not as pronounced as Bobby's stock, and some peach coloration around his head or back, more tanish than pink. In any event, it makes no nevermind to me as to my tegu. You could email Bobby and send him some pics., he'll give you his honest opinion.

I can't seem to feed mine enough so I agree that pinkies and crickets are not going to cut it.

Good luck.

I got my tegus from Rick......they were very green and fit in a 1lb deli cup....so figure they were hatched around the end of July. Aprrox 6 weeks ago Argus was 39 inches long. So, somewhere around 7 months old. He's a beautiful B & W with a white muzzle, not supposed to be any type of giant, just a B & W. : )

Hello!

Got our tegu from Rick in October. He was a summer '07 hatchling. He is roughly 33 inches right now. He eats like a horse!
