My baby B/W Tegu is here! I cut open the top of the bag and set it down in the cage under the lights. I just let him come out on his own time since he has probably had a rough two days. He started poking his head out in no time lookin around, slowly but surely he made his way out. He drank a lot of water out of his dish but hasn't ate yet. I love how the "baby" tegu at Petco looks like a giant to mine. I wanted a hatchling and thats just what I got!! I got some pics of him that I will post up as soon as I get them on my comp.

I keep hearing mixed reviews on what to feed him, or what I can feed him being this small. His actual body is only about 4 inches long, about 10 inches with tail, if that! I got him some small crickets to start with, but does anyone know what else I should be focusing on when they are this small? Thanks guys!

i told you he would be alright, feed him med sized crickets and i gave mine egg as a treat they love it meal worms too, don't forget to dust the crickets twice a weak with vitamin powder so when he eats the crickets he gets the vitamins

I have reptocal that I use on my bearded dragon's crickets, would this be ok, or do they make a powder with more balanced vitamins? How do you prepare your eggs when you give them as a treat?

i just read the make up of reptocal, it is missing alot of things get a multivitamin not just a calcium with d3

Yea my beardie gets most of his vitamins in his balanced diet I feed him. Do you have a vit powder you recommend?

i am nuts about this so i actually raise my own crickets i feed them crickets food with supliments and crickets water drops with supliments and i dust with a multivitamin but i can't remember wich one i use will tell you tonight when i get home

Well maybe you can help me then. I went and bought 2 dozen small crickets today. I have brand new sponges soaked for water, and had a couple pieces of apple in there. I came back 3 hrs later to feed my tegu and they were all dead!!

wow dejavu me too, when i got my first batch of crickets i did sponges and apple and lost my first batch of 125, i need some info first 1 what are the crickets kept in 2 what size dish did you put sponges in 3 what temp are the kept at

Well i didn't put the sponge in any dish, i just made sure they were always wet. i keep them in a 10 gallon aquarium at around 65 degrees. there were two dozen, i went back and got more and now hes eating away. Took me awhile to find him in the mulch, I don't feed him in his tank.

keep them in a warmer location about 70 would be good they like a little warmth. also put the sponge in something so that the moisture is contained, i would take the apple out. give them some other food potatoe, oatmeal make sure the tops is well ventilated and crickets don't like alot of moisture they will die and to cold they will die and not enough air they will die. I am glad he is eating that is a good sign

Thanks for the cricket tips. I will try that out! He didnt seem to eat too much, I think he ate about 5-10 crickets, but some is better than none. He is still prob a little freaked out from the 2 day trip. I hope to have some pics up real soon. I took some today but I need to find the cable to attach it to my comp so I can upload them

See if any local pet shops have frozen pinky mice (little itty bitty baby ones). He should be able to handle one or two of those.

I think I found out the problem. So once again, I bought him some small crickets and NOTHIN! So out of nowhere I decided to toss three of the large crickets by bearded eats, in the tank. Out came the beast! He nailed all three of the large ones I put in there. Now as little as he is I couldnt see him being able to fit anymore down there and so I put him back in his cage and he went straight to the basking area to lay out. Is three large crickets enough for a meal? How many should he be eating a day? Also, how much of my 55 gallon tank should I leave open? I have no lid on it, just screen, and I cant hold humidity with my cypress mulch to save my life. I know this has to largely do with my tank being wide open but I dont want to cover too much and not give him any air? Thanks for everything guys!
