Why not go to a garden supply store and pick up a bale of coconut coir? You can get a bale of it for 8 bucks or so that expands to 8 or 10 cubic feet. It outperforms Cypress or any other substrate when it comes to humidity and such, and doesn't mold over. I don't really believe in supporting companies like Zoo-Med or the like, because you can find the same thing or better in products that aren't "marketed" for Reptiles. Just a big money pit if you ask me.

I am using reptimulch and im thinking of switching to cypress mulch but can you can use you straight from the bag from the nursery? It doesnt have to be "clean" and free of outside bacteria? I know this sounds kind of newbieish but im very careful with his enclosure and diet. But going with the the pet store's "most recommended" is also the pet stores most expensive. So an alternative to spending the $45 for the reptimulch so a cheaper alternative would be great.

Yes,you can use the mulch right from the bag.I have been doing it for a while now and so far so good.My Tegus love it.You are right it is so much cheaper. It doesn't say on the bag how many pounds is in there but it says it has 8 L in it and it didn't even cost me $6.

I understand your having a hard time finding cypress mulch. I get a huge bag at home depot. have you checked hardware stores as well ?

another very good alternative is EUCALYPTUS BARK excellent in holding humidity as well and tegu friendly.
