I just bought my first baby tegu, I am just wondering about the lighting system.
I have three lights, a red heat glo light, uvb and a sun glo light. Im just wondering how it works if I dont want my tegu to hibernate?
I was told at the pet store that I should run the red heat glo 24/7 and the others during the day for 12 hours.
Is that correct?
Ill post pictures of leatherass when I get a chance. Thanks.

Hi kilo. How did you come up with the name leatherass icon_rolleyes.gif icon_biggrin.gif ? I found out that no matter what you do with the lighting you Tegu will hibernate if he wants to or not.I had the same lighting for both of my arg. b/w Tegus ( separate enclosures ) and one hibernated and the other one didn't.But here is some info in case you need it.Oh,a nother thing. It would be good if you get a timer and make the lights come on when the sun comes up and to make them go of when the sun goes down. With the red light I just would keep it on at night because during the day time you will have the basking light on 95 - 115.And he needs a cooler side if he gets to hot.Hope that helps.

ya my wife came up with the name leatherass.... ic well my red light is a hot spot and its at around 100-110F and the sun glo is at around 70-80F..do i need a 24/7 hot spot? because i was told if the temperature drops below 65F the tegu will hibernate is that true? he never comes out during the day or night unless we go and find him and get him to eat and then he'll just go and burie himself right after hes done is that also due to the lighting?

Nice enclosure.Tegus hibernation time is usually over in March and starts if I'm not mistaken in October or so.The one Tegu that did hibernate we got him in December and he went under in January.Zeus does that sometimes, too, what your Tegu is doing. There are times that he comes out every day and there are times that he eats and when he is done he digs right in to the mulch and is gone for the entire next day.But the lighting is always the same.He should be fine if it goes down to those temps. At night our enclosures are between 70 and 75 without any lighting. In the wild the temps are cooler at night, too.Do you have a secure screen top on your enclosure ? for right now it's fine if you don't because he is still small but when he gets bigger he can jump out.
