Hi corn-ball, Congrats ! the tail is the last to shed. may take a couple days to shed completely. it will and if you let him roam around you will start finding pieces of shed from his tail shed everywhere ...lol
his humidity is at 70% so hopefully that happens soon.
speaking of shedding, my ball python is showing signs of shedding and he just finished shedding two weeks ago! very strange. pink belly, cloudy eyes, refuses to eat...

A Tegus are natourious for two part shed Some times they will shed all at once rare or just from vent up or from vent down if you Keep misting every day and baths twice or more a week they will shed as easy as taking shirt off your own back. Also try not to help them too much it can hert If it is not ready to come off.
you just got your tegu. everything is new to him. I don't advise putting him in a tub of water ...yet. some tegus don't even like getting baths and yours may be one of them.
just make sure he gets proper nutrition. a MOIST HIDE is vital since they spend much of their time in their HIDE/BURROW for good shedding.
get 1 pound of ground turkey and a tablespoon of cod liver oil and mix it up together real good. make little serving size freezer bags and put them in the freezer and then feed once or twice a week.

how long should the unshed skin be there before i start to worry? If it doesn't come off real soon then i dunno whats up. Ive been spraying him with "Zilla Humidifying Tropical Mist", I just bathed him (which was hysterical. he jumped out immediately but left his tail hanging into the water), he PREFERS fruits and veggies. He'll eat like one or two pinks or pieces of turkey, but he will clean out the fruit supply (he loves cherry tomatoes). BUt still, no shed. I'm trying to understand the concept of a moist hide. if i put a damp washcloth in there, how will he dig?

If it's the whole tail, I generally don't worry. If there's a piece left at the tip AFTER the rest of tail has shed, then I wet the tail tip down and GENTLY remove it with my fingers/fingertips. _________________ Laura R (FL)

Yes I never liked the spray on stuff this is why baths work If you have the water at a little above room temp OR WORM NOT HOT. they will love it they are not cats or savs
They do love baths you just have to make sure that it can plant there head above water so they can injoy it that is why you see big black tubs in Ricks inclosures. the conc. tubs have a slope on each end which helps them relax there head so they dont drown when they fall a sleep from there soaking.
They do go in and soak in it and every humid loving reptile I have had love to swim my tegus love it and some times I shut the lights and if you have a window with natural light that helps also have the tub prefilled so it doesn't get scared from the loud water don't forget tegus can hear and see well.
Also if your tegu does not like the tub :( when he/she is in shed mode then try puting the tegu in the tub he/she might like it after that. :D

Hi corn-ball, I stopped using the mist and shedding aids sold in pet stores it is a waist of money. although I do like the way tropical mist smells; but I'm not the tegu ....lol. do you have a hide box for him ? what kind ? did you try getting a pound of ground turkey and mix one tablespoon of cod liver oil together and feed once or twice a week. oh and if your tegu does not like baths then don't do it. some don't. what I do is I have a very large plant thingy filled with water that I place in the their house there if they want to dip; they will. if it is the tail; be patient.
