Rodent Pro is offering a sale on Chicks. They are $0.15 each in orders of 500 or more. Could I use chicks as a stable diet? Or Could I mix them in with mice, say 1 mouse and 2 chicks per feeding or something like that? Big Cheese has Mice cheaper so I'm going to order from both companies as long as the chicks are ok. Let me know what you think! _________________ John Light

Chicks make pretty good feeders, but feeding one prey item exclusively isnt a good idea as it will rarely cover all the nutrient groups that a herp needs. Your idea to mix between the two is a better one than feeding them alone - just make sure that your tegu is big enough to eat then first

that feeding chicks is fine when mixed with other things as I said before but now I'm hearing that it really smells bad when it comes out the other end. Would it be best for me to stick to mice? Next thing would be what would the typical feed schedual be? every other day 3 items? Plus I'd offer veggies/fruits. Or more or less often? _________________ John Light

Well, mice smell pretty bad as it is coming out the other end, lol I havent fed chicks myself (they only have fairly big ones at my store) so I cant really tell you otherwise, but I think anything you will be feeding will be pretty stinky so... You can just stick to mice, but again its a good idea to incorporate other foods, like supers.
When theyre young (under a year) you ideally want to be feeding a lot daily - a large helping of crix and a piky/fuzzy or whatever. When they get to a year you can feed every other day - mines about a year and currently eating 4 adult mice every other day with occasional superworms and fruit. Tegus wont eat veg, and even fruit isnt a large part of their diet - only reds really need it, but for variety you can offer seedless grapes and banana etc etc.
when it comes out it will always smell bad because of the meat in their diet. i am lucky that i have a place within driving distance from me that sells live chicks, mice, and ducklings so my savannah monitor can have a pretty good time eating lol what type of tegu are you getting? only Argentinian and Reds need the veggies and fruit should only be a treat. as for how often i would say if it is a year or younger then everyday for as much as they will eat and when older feed it every other day until its doesnt take the fod as fast as it did before _________________ 1.0.0 Green Iguana-Keg

It's a blue supposedly female but we'll find out. Ok so I need to lose the veggie idea and fruit's only as a treat...got it. She's 2ft, I was told 6 months old. So I guess I need to feed every day for awhile. _________________ John Light

Sorry to disagree but Tegues WILL vegetables! My B&W will eat green beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, asparagus, large kidney and others. He also likes several fruits but prefers grapes. Right now at 1+ year and 34-36” fruit and a small amount or veggies make up about 35% of his diet with dusted crickets and hoppers making up the balance.

My Tegu came from the St.Pierre by way of Underground reptiles in Deerfield Beach. This is the how I got him. Gregg (the manager) at Underground told me he once got a whole batch like this. I also spoke with Stella St.Pierre and she explained they keep large numbers of hatchlings in the same pen together. Occasionally happens that one is checking out the food with it’s tongue at the same time one decides to take a bite. No big deal, from the best I can tell he can still smell however his range may be cut down a little. I think it just gives him a little character and my wife likes it better, she says he looks like a puppy.
Anyway can you believe he had been purchased prier to me and then was returned to the store as a defect? That’s why I named him Lucky, he has been nothing but great since I got him!

I liked his personality at the shop even though he was half in hibernation, I figured nobody else would take him and I didn’t mind at all. As a mater of fact he sometimes makes me laugh the way he uses his short tongue. Honestly I thing his shortcoming helps me read his moods or intentions better. I can tell when he is really excited or annoyed the way he tries extra hard to stick his tongue very far to get every sent he can.

He is a cutie that's for damn sure! Can't wait till tomorrow (a few hrs) and I get my girl (?). The person that has the pair brought the price down to $650 shipped. I want them but they are very slow getting back to me. I gave them my # several times but no phone calls. If my girl ends up being a girl I will somehow find a way to pick up that pair! If for some reason I don't pick them up I'll just get him/her a mate. Be ready for Pics Galore tomorrow LOL. Now...if she's calm when I get her out of her shipping box I'll get lots of pics and mess with her a little. If she's pissy...it's off to the cage to settle in. I'll have to wait and see. I was supposed to have her last friday....the wait has been killing me!!! No snakes here anymore...all will be at my partners house. Looks like I'll have 1.1 or 1.2 blue tegu's here and that all and Fine with me!!! _________________ John Light

Ah, but yours is special - mine will never look at them, and I do remember Stella St Pierre saying that most tegus will never eat veg so nyah
Incidentally is that a black beauty spot on the top of Lucky's head? My tegu has one one one of his loreal scales on one side of his head - just one black circle. Kinda cute
