I have three tegus- one male Argentine black and white who I've had for over a year and a half and two female yearlings who I recently purchased. I was keeping the females together, but just noticed that one of them seems to be vomiting up food. They both show interest in eating, but one hasn't been keeping it down. I've separated them to figure out which one it is. Has anyone else had any issues with vomiting? Could it be from overeating (gorging so much that she can't keep the food down?) I'll probably be taking her to the vet very soon if this persists- she should be getting ready to hibernate, but I don't want to let her do so if she isn't healthy. _________________ Tupi the tegu is proud, tough, and knows how to get what he wants!

Took the tegu to the vet today and she was diagnosed with a bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal tract. She'll get some injections of antibiotics every other day and should be fine. Thank you for the replies! _________________ Tupi the tegu is proud, tough, and knows how to get what he wants!

I only got this particular tegu a week ago, so it was probably something that she had before I bought her. She still has a great appetite. The thing that tipped her off to having a bacterial infection was that she was bloated, but not hard (like you might have from intestinal blockage). She was full of gas. The vet said that's always a sure sign of a bacterial infection. When I asked what could have caused it, he said, "These things happen..." _________________ Tupi the tegu is proud, tough, and knows how to get what he wants!

That's a great bit of advice for tegu owners everywhere (the hardness of the belly). After the antibiotics are complete, I would suggest using Nutribac or Benebac to replenish the natural, good bacteria that will also be killed off. _________________ Laura R (FL)

I will look into those products. Thanks for the advice. The tegus will be getting ready to hibernate soon (my big male has already started eating less), so I need to make sure that they're in the best health possible! _________________ Tupi the tegu is proud, tough, and knows how to get what he wants!
