Hello all. Well, today I came home from the gym. I walked into my animal room and who got out of his tank and was right on the floor in front of me. My tegu, Smokey. I opened the door, he looked up and was like "oh, shit" and scurried off. He hid behind a big tote against the wall.

I went over moved the tote, picked him up, with no resistance from him and put him back in the tank. Where he proceeded to walk around.

Fortunately, he had no breaks, cuts or burns. The room is pretty animal friendly, so its not like he could really hurt himself on anything. However, all my other animals, south african bullfrogs, a pac man and a whites tree frog are in there. They are up high on tables though. I checked them and no one was missing..lol

Did you determine how he got out?

I believe he pushed the metal screen off the 75 gallon tank. The end without all the light domes. Smokey can stand on 2 legs. Not only against a wall, but literally, just stand up on 2 legs. Also, when he does stand up, he uses his tail to push himself up even more. So not only is he standing, but he back legs are off the ground because he is using his tail to get more height.
He must have used this technique, then did a pull up with his front legs, pushed the screen up with his snout, climbed over the edge and probably hooked his tail over the ledge to lessen the fall. This is what Iam assuming.

Damn tegus and their intelligence lol

Maybe you should put some kind of weight on top of the tank from now on? icon_razz.gif

Mine generally free roam around my apartment like dogs. Of course they are big enough to not get lost or in trouble.

My Colombian used to stand on two legs...I have a uro that stands on two legs to eat greens out of my hand. it's cute!

You may want to get a set of clips for the 75 lid. I like to let mine free roam, but I prefer it when it's my choice. icon_wink.gif

Hello everyone. I put 1, 5 lb plate on each corner of the tank. He can't move all that weight. however, he will be out of this tank in a couple of weeks and into a new enclosure. The new enclosure isn't much higher. however, it is a lot larger.
