Hello,
I have a shedding year old b/w tegu named Luciano whose tail seem to be splitting between the scales a little bit. He had tail shedding problems with his last shed and I'm worried that the tiny spits are the result from that. He hasn't yet shed his lower half of his body yet, so I'm hoping the splits go away with the shed. I've been feeding him more fruits, giving him more baths, and I constantly keep his hide and enclosure moist. When I examine his tail, he seems to wince a bit. I'm not sure if it's because its painful to him or if he's just jumpy because I can't hold him as much as I would like to because of my working schedule.
I'm confused because I had Luciano since February and he NEVER had this problem before (the splits nor tail shed). Can anyone give me some advice on this matter? I'm going to call around for reptile vets when I wake later but was wondering if there something that I can do in the meantime. I really want him to keep his tail.
If anyone needs a picture, I can email them one. I'm not sure how to post pictures in the forums..
Hi Luciano and Welcome to theTegu. btw, I like that name
it sounds as though the 'splits' is from old shed without seeing it for myself. you can take a luke warm wash cloth and just massage his tail for now. be patient and try. I know some don't like their tail to be touched.
did you check the humidity in Luciano's house ? I like to keep it about 75% and a moist hide box. 65 - 70 % humidity should suffice. here is a very good video made by one of our members ...
also, what are you feeding him ? I am a believer that fruit and shedding have little to do with each other. some tegus will eat fruit and others will not touch it and they are perfectly healthy. if Luciano eats ground turkey then take a pound of it and a table spoon of cod liver oil and mix it up real good. make serving sizes, put in freezer bags and place in the freezer and feed this to him once or twice a week.
