I built an outside enclosure. It's 8 feet by 8 feet. The walls are over three feet above the ground. There is a layer of chicken wire just inches under the ground that spreads out and up to meet the 10 foot by 10 foot chainlink kennel that surrounds the enclosure. The kennel is 8 feet tall and is intended to keep animals from getting in. The space around the enclosure, between the enclosure and the kennel is filled with large rock to keep the large tegus from digging all the way out.
The inside of the enclosure is filled with cypress mulch. There is a large water container to drink/soak in and a smaller one intended for drinking. There is a spot created to cast a shadow over part of the enclosure.
Everything was fine for a couple weeks of use. Then Draco, one of the large tegus I have, dug a whole down and against the chicken wire. The wire and rock stopped the Draco as I had planned. What I didn't plan was for Draco to allow Jewel, the smallest tegu I have, to pass through. She was small enough to fit through the chicken wire and between the large chunks of rock.
It's been a few days and I have been checking randomly outside to see if I can catch her basking. She is likely under a shed I have out there, but there is no way for me to be certain. I have placed live traps baited with turkey. I assume she is coming out to eat wild grasshoppers, worms, etc so I am unsure if the baited traps will work well.
To avoid this from happening again I just picked up 8 bags of premixed cement to make a foundation for the enclosure.
