Ate 1 hopper today while I watched. He killed the other 3 hoppers. I will be switching to f/t when I start buying in bulk (soon!) I did try and hold one by the tail and put it near his nose but he didn't seem interested. Anyways...He's eatting and now he's got 3 others when he wants them (I left them in the cage). I will take them out and put them in the freezer tonight when I get home from work if they aren't gone yet. _________________ John Light

Please do be careful when feeding by hand; a tegus feeding instinct is incredibly strong and its not unusual for them to lunge towards prey and grab a finger or something by mistake - and in worst case scenario thats a finger less for you
I dont dare put my hands near the tegu when hes eating; I just throw the bowl in and get out of there as quick as possible! Its the only time when Im still a little scared of my teg

I feed everything by hand including 12ft retics! A guy at zoological imports tried to feed an adult tegu by hand and lost 2 fingers. This is just a 2fter and I'm not to worried about a bite at this point. I know the risks involved, and I'm getting to know his body movement. You always leave room for error! This is not something I plan on Continuing to do
Heh - if a 2 footer gets a hold of your finger and does the death roll Im sure you will be singing a different tune Its not the biting but the holding on and doing as much damage as possible thats the problem!

I had a 2ft timor monitor latch on and do some damage. A 2ft tegu is much larger then the timor monitor I had. I know what I'm working with. I will be switching over to the bowl method here shortly! _________________ John Light
