Male Colombian Black& Gold Tegu need new home.

Looking to find a new home for my adult tame Colombian Black & Gold Tegu that has been raised in captivity since a hatchling. He's 2.5 feet (most is tail). I'm feeding him tuna fish, insects, rodents, fruit, and eggs. Tegus are related to monitors.

He's tame but a slightly when first pciked up . Meaning, at first he may wiggle when being picked up but calms down quickly. The tip of his tail is nipped from when he was a baby. Other than that he's 100% perfect. Sheds great and no health problems.

This offer is for the lizard only and no cage. You can keep him in a 4' cage with cypress mulch and a water bowl. He's going to need a heat source but no special bulbs like UVB unless you want to but he gets his calcium from the rodents and calcium dusted insects. Also a hide box is needed. You can make one from a kitty liter box (he'll use it to sleep at night).

I'm asking only $45 or will trade locally for other reptiles.

Thanks,
Frank Hayden

first of all tegus are not related to monitors tegus are teiids and monitors and varanus 2 different family's! and second of all uvb is essential for all lizards(not 100% but for the most part) and withought it the tegu could have gotten bumps and defformaty's while it was growing. you lucky it didnt. sorry to flame you but it doesnt sound as if you did your research before you bought an animal. icon_confused.gif . now that ive sayd the bad stuff im happy to say everything else sounds ok except cage could be a bit bigger (i think , i dont know about black and gold tegus only arg reds) but bigger is always better for whomever you sell it too. I hope that maybe I helped you with future lizards/ pets so that they dont end up suffering for a easily fixed mistake.

don't worry about the spelling , just use the spell Check before posting and it will correct the spelling for you if you feel its needed. Most of us get the point and understand what one is saying.

Merry Christmas across the great pond.

Male Tegus on hold. It looks like he's going to Texas. Thanks to all that were interested.

Spencer, your rushing into comments that I think you should of asked me about personally instead of posting here. I think if you really wanted to help me that would of been more productive. First,I did not raise this tegu. I've only had it for 2 weeks and didn't intend to keep it. However, I've done the best I could consider I've never kept tegu before.

As far as not doing reaseach..wrong!

I've emailed Bert @ agama for information plus I've contacted other tegu keepers. I've been keeping reptiles since 1979 so I'm well aware how to care for reptiles and when to ask for information when I need it. Thanks.

About flaming,I don't participate in such idiotic things. I don't feel your flaming me at all. I can see your passionate about tegu. Kudos to you.
Gold Tegu are smaller than Argentines and don't require the 8'X4' cage. Besides that mine are running around the living room most of the day and basking in the window. And as far as I was told Tegu don't need UVB lights if their diet is primarily rodents because the bones of these animals provide enough calcium to prevent MBD besides that dusted insects also provide additional calcium. Is the UVB thing still out for debate?

Dude, I've been to London a few times. Good times!

Lastly, If you have sources of information that prove I'm wrong I'd appreciate that. Heck, I love learning new things and don't mind admitting if ever I'm wrong.

Merry Christmas.
Frank

fhayden about the uvb light thing if the diet for the tegu makes up all that calcium from the bones and what not thats good but its the uvb that helps spread the calcium throughout the whole body so that the lizard docent get bumps and deformitys. i've had my argentine red for about 3 1/2 months and hes doubled in size. His name is charlie and his diet consist of the fish already said. grapes, melons, crickets, mealworms, dragonfruit(on occasion here its 8$ the pound jeez) and hopper mice. he is 20 inches long and 7 months old. the guy i got him from had him in something i keep my mice in so it was way to small for charlie to grow so it stunted his growth for 3 months but hes back on track and eating and growing like i've never seen before.

back on topic , fhayden i meant no harm in anyway and did not intend to insult you if i did i was just saying some stuff that may have been wrong. i don't know much about black and gold tegu housing so that was my mistake. your diet for the lizard however seems flawless and if it eats all that is probably in tip top shape. icon_lol.gif

I forget what post i read it from but it says somewhere in this forum that the uvb from the sun and or lights helps distribute the calcium and probably other vitamins to all the parts of the body. I know i already said it but i am just trying to make it clear.

And again i am sorry for insulting/annoying you in anyway with my first post and did not intend on starting anything, just trying to help you out for if you ever were going to keep a tegu in the future or something like that.

PS: thanks for the idea for the hide charlie is outgrowing his storebought ones i have he is on my biggest one and growing out of it now so that was a good idea icon_razz.gif

sincerely, Spencer

Spencer. It is nice to see that a young man of your age (13,for some that don't know) is so polite. You are right about the UVB light.I'm not sure if I'm right but some times I think that Tegus don't really need a hide. The reason why I'm saying that is because my two Tegus don't even use there Hide. They just borrow them self in the ground where ever they feel like it.
