    Default Need info on Monitor

Hi everyone. Well I just found the Monitor that I have been looking for, for so long. I just wanted to see if anyone of you had one like this one ( link below ) before or still do. Just want to see how you like them and how tame they can be. Thank you for your time.

I had work with black throat monitor. They are just like the ''cape'' monitor but if I remember cape monitor are smaller. They still need a lot of room. Some people say a 8x4x4 feet enclosure is enough, but I would go with a 10x4x4 feet or a room. (They grow extremely fast 3.5-4.0 feet in the first year) As for feeding, well just like every big and heavy monitor, they will eat everything you offer them (insects, whole prey, eggs, fish etc).

As for the behavior, It's 50/50. Some of them can become extremely tame, or extremely demonic. Make sure it's a captive bred, and he/she is a baby, to ''raise'' the possibility of finishing with a ''calm'' one. I know that they don't like much to be handle (hard to handle a 5-6 feet monster) but some will have their ''sensitive part'' on the neck and top of the head.

One thing you have to remember, is that those kind of monitor have an incredibly strong feeding response. And will easily mistaken your hand for food (during feeding). I known one guy, that I used to work with, that has been bitten by his 4 feet adult female, and she broke his thumb.

However, good luck with him/ her

Thank you everyone for your help and info. I found a breeder one time ( online ) but now I can't find his website any more. My boyfriend wants to have a Monitor. I wouldn't mind having one but I'm very happy with the Tegus. If we do get a Monitor I would be so worried about stepping on its tail. I'm just 5'4" lol. I just like the cape white throat monitors so much better then the other ones because they have a nicer pattern and colors. I'm a bit worried about the ones in the link that I posted about them because they look so thin and dehydrated .

Well, the monitor baby, doesn't seems so bad. Blackthroat/whitethroat/savannah are known for gaining weight pretty fast, so I wouldn't worried about their size. But, it would be possible that they refuse to eat, I would contact the owner to make sure they are eating well.

As for stepping on the tail, Monitor has stronger tail that won't break if you pull it (I don't recommend to do it neither) but compare to a tegu. I would be more worried to step on a tegu's tail than a white throat monitor.

I love the white throat monitors! I went into a sorry excuse of a pet store that had a few large lizards kept in 75g fish tanks. One was a 75g tank that contained 2 (yes TWO) adult Tegus, one b&w and a Red. Antoher tank had a young white throat, she was the length of the tank plus some, she looked so neglected, I couldn't resist lifting the lid as she was scratching at the glass in a helpless way. I reached my hand in and she loved the attention. She had the cutest round face, I loved her! If they didn't get so big that would have been my next lizard. It was the same day that I fell in love with Tegus. The poor Tegus were also very neglected but when I reached in to touch them the b&w was pushing into my hand like a dog would to get a good pet. Needless to say I reported them to the local SPCA. I couldn't get over the "tallons" on the white throat! They were some heavy duty claws!!!
I think the babies in the add look so beautiful and you should go for it as long as they are eating good. You have experience with large reptiles so why not.

    Best of luck,
    Vanessa
